O'Shaughnessy Ventures' New Fellowship Initiative

O'Shaughnessy Ventures LLC, an investment firm dedicated to supporting creative innovators, recently awarded a fellowship to Joseph Beyene, a scientist and entrepreneur based in Silver Spring, Maryland. This notable accolade aims to enhance Beyene's pioneering efforts towards developing a unique skin treatment that targets a significant public health concern: tick-borne diseases.

With the spread of tick populations into new geographic areas, the associated risk of diseases transmitted by these pests has escalated. Current repellents primarily focus on deterring insects such as mosquitoes but often falter once a tick makes contact with the skin. Through the O'Shaughnessy Fellowship, Beyene will receive the financial support and resources needed to propel his research forward. Beyene's educational background is impressive; he earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, before completing a master's in cell and molecular biology at San Francisco State University. He further honed his expertise by obtaining a Ph.D. from Harvard University's T.H. Chan School of Public Health. His doctoral work played a crucial role in establishing the scientific foundation for Vesigen Therapeutics, a prestigious Harvard spinout that has successfully secured a Series A funding of $28.5 million. Currently, he imparts his knowledge as adjunct faculty at Northeastern University's Graduate Biotechnology Program, focusing on drug development and scientific communication.

Jim O'Shaughnessy, founder and CEO of O'Shaughnessy Ventures, underscored Beyene's impressive resilience and determination, explaining that selecting him as a fellow was an easy decision. The firm plans to award a total of 20 fellowships in 2026, with Beyene being the nineteenth fellow recognized this year.
