Wiley and AMNH's Collaborative Project to Create a Raman Spectroscopy Database from Mineral Collections

Collaborative Efforts between Wiley Science Solutions and AMNH

Wiley Science Solutions (WSS) has recently announced an exciting initiative in partnership with the renowned American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). Together, they aim to establish a comprehensive Raman spectroscopy database based on one of the world's finest mineral collections housed at AMNH. This collaboration seeks to enhance global access to the museum's valuable mineral specimens for researchers across various scientific fields, including materials science, geology, and forensic sciences.

The identification of unknown samples with speed and accuracy has become increasingly vital in recent years. Reliable spectral reference data forms the cornerstone of research efficiency and analytical precision. Recognizing this need, WSS and AMNH are set to systematically acquire and organize high-quality Raman spectral data from over 120,000 mineral specimens and more than 5,000 gems within the museum's collection. This effort will provide a valuable reference data foundation for researchers, students, and industry technicians, thereby facilitating advanced mineral identification and analysis.

The spectral data generated through this project will be accessible through WSS's analytical software platform, "KnowItAll," and the online spectral database, "SpectraBase." These channels are designed to widen access not only for software users but also for a broader research community. The initial data will be gradually released starting in spring 2026, with plans for continual expansion in future.

Graeme Whitley, Senior Director of Data Science Solutions at WSS, expressed excitement about the project, emphasizing its role in Wiley's commitment to providing high-quality standard reference data to researchers worldwide. He stated, "The AMNH mineral collection is an incredibly valuable scientific resource, and by making it accessible as spectral data, we can contribute to further advancements in research and analysis."

Kate Kiseeva, Curator of the Physical Sciences department at AMNH, also shared her enthusiasm, commenting, "Our mineral collection has served as a foundational resource for geological research since its establishment in 1869. I am thrilled that this project will provide new access to this precious collection, offering high-quality spectral data to researchers around the world."

The upcoming spectral database will systematically categorize the 'fingerprint information' of substances, which can be obtained through analytical techniques such as Raman spectroscopy. This information is essential for identifying unknown materials, managing quality control, and verifying research findings. In recent years, high-quality data has also played a critical role in the advancement of AI and data-driven research methodologies.

WSS is committed to continuing to support the enhancement of research and analytical endeavors through reliable data and advanced software. The value it brings as a foundation for future research and analysis will undoubtedly contribute significantly to the scientific community.
