Celebrating Transformation: Sidney Lanier High School Renovation

Sidney Lanier High School, nestled in the heart of San Antonio's Westside community, has recently been awarded the esteemed Caudill Award, the pinnacle of recognition for exceptional educational design in Texas. This accolade was bestowed upon LPA Design Studios for their remarkable renovation that turned an outdated, windowless structure into a vibrant, open, and culturally infused learning environment.

The Renovation Process

Completed in January 2025, the renovation expertly integrated modern architectural elements while honoring the rich Mexican-American heritage of the community. The previous design, a brick fortress dating back to the 1970s, has been transformed with expansive windows, allowing natural light to pour into classrooms, thereby fostering a more engaged and nourishing educational atmosphere. This significant design choice aligns with research that indicates students perform better when they have access to natural views.

Throughout the campus, innovative light wells and clerestory windows have been installed, fundamentally altering the previous gloomy interiors. The spaces were carefully designed to not only enhance aesthetic value but also encourage flexible teaching methods aligned with current educational trends and the community's evolving needs.

Recognizing Excellence in Design

The renovation of Lanier High School stood out in Texas educational architecture, achieving commendations in every category addressed by the award criteria: excellence in design, value, wellness, community impact, planning, and transformation. As stated by Federico Cavazos, the LPA Design Director, this project serves as a “reflection of the resilience and aspirations of the Westside community.” Every mural and design element pays tribute to the local cultural fabric, allowing students a profound connection to their heritage.

Kate Mraw, Director of K-12 at LPA, emphasized the collaborative effort between her team and the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD). “Every project is an opportunity to create environments that inspire students and reflect the values of the communities we're privileged to work with,” she explained. Such profound collaboration allowed for a school environment adaptive to various teaching styles and community-centric activities, shaping the educational landscape in a transformative way.

Additional Accolades

The Caudill Award is not the only accolade to come Lanier High School’s way; it also recently clinched the national AIA Education Facility Design Award, along with several local honors. This includes the Community Impact Award and the Design – Adaptive Reuse Award conferred by the AIA San Antonio chapter. Such recognitions underscore the depth of the renovation's positive impacts both educationally and socially.

Two other LPA projects, General Marshall Middle School and Newman Smith High School, were also spotlighted during the recent annual Exhibit of School Architecture for their innovative designs. General Marshall was praised for its new urbanist principles, while Newman Smith’s planning excellence was highlighted for creating greater space efficiency without compromising quality.

Looking Ahead

The ceremonial presentation of the Caudill Award and other acknowledgments will take place during the 2025 TASA Midwinter Conference in Austin next month. This event presents an opportunity to showcase these transformative educational spaces and reinforce the notion that thoughtful design is integral to community growth and student success.
