Nature Positive Initiatives at Nasu Senbonmatsu Farm
Mori Mirai Corporation, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, is embarking on an exceptional journey with a mission to promote sustainable forestry, dubbed 'Sustainable Forest.' The company has announced a new initiative that leverages the scenic beauty of
Nasu Senbonmatsu Farm, Japan's largest tourist farm, located in Tochigi Prefecture. This initiative aims to integrate nature-positive practices focusing on forestry experiences and timber utilization, all while enhancing biodiversity.
Background of the Nature Positive Initiative
The groundwork for this initiative stems from the commitment of
Horai Corporation, which spearheads a circular dairy farming approach, establishing a foundation rooted in natural capital such as forests, agricultural land, and diverse wildlife. The company aims to increase visitor numbers and enhance their experience, thereby contributing to regional revitalization and sustainable growth. By progressing toward operations that 'protect while utilizing' natural resources, the initiative seeks to transition various activities, including experiences, dining, lodging, and leisure, into value-added experiences for visitors.
The hope is to create a forward-thinking tourism model where nature and humans can coexist harmoniously.
Details on the Nature Positive Program
Set to launch in the fall of 2026, the nature-positive initiative at Nasu Senbonmatsu Farm represents a robust collaboration between Mori Mirai and various stakeholders. Through this program, four main areas focusing on biodiversity surveys and environmental education will be developed:
1.
Forestry Management and Biodiversity Experience: Participants will engage in hands-on learning about sustainable forestry practices and the importance of biodiversity.
2.
Satoyama Experience: This involves understanding the ecosystem services provided by rural areas and their importance to community well-being.
3.
Advanced Circular Dairy Farming: Highlighting sustainable practices within the dairy farming sector, participants will observe and learn about circular systems that benefit both agriculture and the environment.
4.
Forest Ecosystem Building: This segment focuses on creating resilient forest ecosystems that support diverse plant and animal life.
To facilitate the program, Mori Mirai plans to collaborate with specialists and researchers in each field, establishing frameworks for practical implementation in the area.
Additionally, Horai has signed a three-year advertising contract with
Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMBC Group), aiming to bolster publicity and outreach initiatives, leading up to the grand opening in April 2025. The partnership also highlights the significance of the farm's annual visitor numbers, reportedly around 1.15 million based on recent traffic data.
Expansion of Forestry Programs
Mori Mirai also echoes its commitment to contributing to local communities through partnerships with organizations such as Aoba Group and Takahara Forestry Association. By leveraging local resources, the organization intends to facilitate unique nature experiences and engage in the restoration of local flora.
Through its programs, the Nasu Senbonmatsu Farm will promote the importance of sustainable forestry and the idea of nature positivity among many visitors, serving as an educational hub for environmental awareness and stewardship.
Mori Mirai's extensive relationships with timber distribution and forestry stakeholders will be leveraged to foster a sustainable relationship between humanity and nature.
