CordenPharma Expands Peptide Manufacturing Capacity with AmbioPharm Acquisition
In a significant move to strengthen its presence in the peptide manufacturing sector, CordenPharma has announced the acquisition of AmbioPharm. This strategic decision is set to enhance CordenPharma's capabilities in developing and producing complex peptide active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). AmbioPharm, a well-established contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) based in North Augusta, South Carolina, operates additional facilities in Shanghai, China. The acquisition will not only bolster CordenPharma's production capacity in the United States but also expand its global expertise in the field of peptide APIs.
The agreement marks a critical step in CordenPharma's strategy to diversify and strengthen its manufacturing capabilities for peptide-based products, responding to the growing complexity of peptide drug development. With increasing demand for highly purified, long-chain peptides, this acquisition allows CordenPharma to enhance its offerings and meet the evolving needs of its clients in the pharmaceutical industry.
CordenPharma will benefit from the advanced manufacturing capabilities brought by AmbioPharm, which include methods for linear peptide synthesis, solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), and hybrid synthesis techniques. After the acquisition is finalized, CordenPharma clients will have access to flexible manufacturing options tailored to meet specific project requirements.
The integration of AmbioPharm’s facilities in both the U.S. and China will significantly enhance CordenPharma’s operational network. With a total of 11 facilities spread across Europe and North America, CordenPharma is solidifying its standing as a leading player in the peptide manufacturing space. This growth is expected not only to increase supply chain efficiency but also to provide clients with robust support options from initial development stages to commercial-scale production.
AmbioPharm employs approximately 400 individuals across its two locations, reflecting its substantial contributions to the peptide manufacturing landscape. By adding another U.S. facility dedicated to peptide production, CordenPharma enhances its capacity to meet large-scale commercial peptide projects effectively. The existing plant situated in Colorado will continue to complement the newly acquired North Augusta facility, enabling CordenPharma to offer completely U.S.-based supply chain solutions.
Furthermore, the Shanghai site presents state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities that will cater to the supply of peptides for clinical and commercial use, encompassing solid phase, liquid phase, and hybrid synthesis operations. This integration will therefore distribute CordenPharma's global peptide platform across three continents.
Since Astorg acquired CordenPharma in 2022, the firm has been keen on broadening its peptide portfolio through strategic investments aimed at enhancing production capabilities. As part of the acquisition agreement, AmbioPharm shareholders will reinvest in the merged company, demonstrating their confidence in the combined entity's growth potential.
Dr. Michael Quirmbach, President and CEO of CordenPharma Group, emphasized that this acquisition not only significantly enhances the company’s peptide platform but also solidifies its objective of becoming a leading partner in peptide manufacturing. As peptide programs grow increasingly complex, the need for CDMO partners who can provide comprehensive support — from scientific method selection to robust process integrity and flexible geographic options — has become critical.
Brian Gregg, CEO of AmbioPharm, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating that joining CordenPharma represents an exciting new chapter for both organizations. Together, they aim to offer clients enhanced technical capabilities and a highly reliable peptide platform supported by a globally integrated network.
This acquisition is seen as a pivotal point in CordenPharma’s growth trajectory, reinforcing the company’s strategic positioning while opening up expansive opportunities in the peptide market. Paul Perreault, Chairman of the Board at CordenPharma, noted the growing potential of peptides to improve patient outcomes globally.
Ling Yang, Partner and Director of Healthcare at Carlyle Asia, praised the achievements of AmbioPharm and reiterated confidence in the robust growth potential of the peptide CDMO market. BNP Paribas acted as the exclusive financial advisor for AmbioPharm during this acquisition process.
CordenPharma, known for supporting innovative biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies in the development of complex drugs, is dedicated to leveraging its global network of integrated facilities. This acquisition marks a significant step forward in enhancing their operational capacity, which encompasses a broad range of services including peptides, oligonucleotides, and other complex APIs.
With this strategic move, CordenPharma is poised to not only meet but exceed the expectations of its clients in the rapidly evolving pharmaceutical landscape, ensuring that they can bring critical peptide-based medications to patients around the world efficiently and effectively.
