Innovation in Value Creation through Carbon Footprint Analysis: Okayama University's Remarkable Approach

Innovative Approaches at Okayama University: Value Creation through Carbon Footprint Education

On September 26, 2025, Takao Funakura, the Deputy Director of Okayama University's Industry-Academia Collaboration Center, delivered an insightful presentation to approximately 30 attendees from various sectors during the Okayama Nikkei Conference at the ANA Crowne Plaza Okayama. The lecture focused on the theme of "Value Creation through Carbon Footprint" (CFP) initiatives, which aim to integrate environmental sustainability with economic progress.

Having a dual role as an academic staff member and a student in the graduate program at Okayama University's Graduate School of Social and Cultural Sciences, Funakura underscores the significance of merging practical experience with academic research. He presented a unique model for fostering innovation that engages local communities and students, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.

Drawing from his research on how implementing CFP can enhance the dynamic capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), Funakura introduced the activities of the 'CFP Nexus Working Group.' Hosted within the university's Digital Innovation Creation Platform, OI-Start, this initiative brings together students, faculty, businesses, local governments, and financial institutions to explore new pathways for value creation grounded in carbon footprint analysis. Such collaborative efforts have garnered national attention, highlighting Okayama University's vital role in spearheading environmental innovation.

Additionally, he highlighted student-led projects, such as the 'Carbon Footprint Challenge,' and the Ministry of the Environment's selection of Okayama University for a program to establish a community-based decarbonization management support framework. Participants expressed enthusiasm for these initiatives, recognizing them as exemplary cases of local collaboration driven by student initiative.

In his closing remarks, Funakura emphasized, "The carbon footprint is not merely a representation of CO₂ emissions; it serves as a reflective mirror for products and services, marks the starting point for future narratives, and becomes a common language that connects diverse stakeholders. Only then can it be the starting point for value creation." He reiterated his commitment to further challenge the creation of new value centered around carbon footprint initiatives in collaboration with students and local enterprises.

This lecture is part of Okayama University's continued implementation of the J-PEAKS program, which aims to enhance the capabilities of university staff through advanced management of research. Funakura's recognition at the 2025 National Congress of the Japan Cost Accounting Research Society, where he received the best student award, reflects the high evaluation of his research outcomes grounded in practical knowledge.

Okayama University remains dedicated to fostering collaborative ventures that leverage carbon footprint analysis to support decarbonization management, digital transformation, and more across various sectors. Future developments and innovations from Okayama University, recognized as a leading regional research university, are eagerly anticipated.
