My Friend's Place Unveils Plans for New Campus to Aid Homeless Youth in LA

My Friend's Place Announces a New Purpose-Built Campus

In a significant development for Los Angeles's homeless youth community, My Friend's Place has unveiled plans for a new dedicated campus aimed at supporting young individuals facing homelessness. This initiative represents a hopeful and transformative future for the nonprofit organization, which has been a steadfast resource for vulnerable youth since its inception in 1988.

Understanding the Project

Strategically designed to address the unique challenges of the young people it serves, the forthcoming campus will serve as a safe haven where these individuals can find essential resources, services, and support all in one location. Heather Carmichael, the Executive Director of My Friend's Place, stated, "This new campus is about creating a place where young people can feel safe, welcomed, and supported from the moment they walk through the door."

For years, My Friend's Place has worked tirelessly to connect young people experiencing homelessness to the services they need to build a better future. This new facility is poised to enhance those efforts significantly by providing an inclusive environment that reflects the community it serves.

Funding and Contributions

The ambitious project is being fueled by a $20 million capital campaign, which has already garnered over $11.3 million in pledges, showcasing a substantial commitment from supporters. As the campaign enters its public phase, the organization is well on its way to achieving its financial goal, with more than 55% already secured.

A notable advocate for My Friend's Place is singer and actress Miley Cyrus, who has been a long-time supporter of the nonprofit's mission. Serving as the Honorary Chair of the campaign, Cyrus shared, "I have seen firsthand the impact that My Friend's Place can have on these young people. Join us in making this new campus a reality." Her involvement underscores the project's community significance and the collective effort to uplift local youth.

Collaborative Efforts

My Friend's Place has partnered with celebrated architecture firm BAR Architects, project management experts MGAC, and general contractor Howard CDM to ensure the new campus embodies accessibility, support, and community focus. Additionally, Bobby Berk, an Emmy-winning designer and television personality, is contributing his expertise to help create a nurturing environment that mirrors the aspirations of the youth served.

Construction plans are moving swiftly as the organization anticipates finalizing design details and securing necessary approvals by December 2026. To continue providing essential services during this transition, My Friend's Place is also exploring a temporary location where operations can proceed with minimal interruption.

The construction of the new facility is slated to kick off in April 2027, culminating with its expected completion in December 2028. This timeline reflects My Friend's Place's commitment to maintaining continuity in their support services for homeless youth during this crucial period of transformation.

A Legacy of Service

Since its founding by two compassionate individuals in 1988, My Friend's Place has evolved from a grassroots effort of distributing meals to offering a comprehensive array of services. Today, the organization provides a critical safety net for over 1,300 young people and their children every year, addressing their physical, mental, and social needs in a judgment-free atmosphere.

As this nonprofit embarks on its next chapter with the construction of the new campus, it remains dedicated to fostering an environment where young individuals can thrive. By focusing on the holistic well-being of these youths, My Friend's Place continues to champion the ideals of empowerment and inclusion.
