Okayama University Hosts Second Aquatic Environmental Science Seminar in 2026

Recent Advances in Aquatic Environmental Science at Okayama University

On March 9, 2026, Okayama University hosted its second Aquatic Environmental Science Seminar as part of its initiative under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's J-PEAKS program. The seminar took place at the Co-Creation Innovation Lab (KIBINOVE) on the Tsushima campus. Approximately 40 participants, including faculty and students, engaged in lively discussions that transcended disciplinary boundaries, leading to innovations and novel ideas in environmental research.

The seminar commenced with a special session featuring Dr. Geraldine Echue, Assistant Editor of the highly acclaimed journal Advanced Materials (Wiley, IF 26.8). She shared valuable insights on the nuances of academic publishing, including tips for writing papers, the review process, and what editors look for when evaluating submissions. Furthermore, the rising role of AI tools in academic publishing was discussed, highlighting contemporary trends affecting research dissemination.

Following the opening lecture, three esteemed researchers presented their latest findings. Associate Professor Moizumi from the Institute of Resource Plant Science discussed the molecular mechanisms behind aquaporins related to selective permeability of water and CO₂. Professor Fukuda from the Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science elaborated on the potential applications of plasmonics in aquatic environmental science. Lastly, Professor Makiura from Tohoku University's Graduate School of Engineering introduced the creation and functionality of porous metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets utilizing aquatic interfaces.

The engaging format of the seminar allowed robust interaction, with many questions arising from attendees regarding the research content and future developments. The session concluded with a networking event, providing further opportunities for participants to exchange ideas and explore future collaborations.

This seminar served as a platform for re-evaluating the research themes surrounding aquatic environmental science, and it emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to tackle issues related to water resources, environmental challenges, and energy sustainability. Okayama University is committed to fostering cross-disciplinary research and collaboration under the J-PEAKS initiative, aiming to create new knowledge that contributes to both local and global communities.

The university looks forward to continued engagement with local and international partners, and to advancing its mission as a leading research institution. Stay tuned for more updates on Okayama University’s innovative research initiatives in aquatic environmental science.
