Okinawa's Yonaguni Town Enhances Childcare with Online Consultation for Families

Yonaguni Town's Innovative Support for Childbirth and Childcare

Okinawa's Yonaguni Town, the westernmost island of Japan, is taking significant steps to enhance support for families by implementing an online consultation service in obstetrics and pediatrics, starting April 1, 2026. The initiative is a collaboration with Kids Public, a Tokyo-based company dedicated to providing health consultation services.

This service will provide residents with direct access to obstetricians, midwives, and pediatricians from the comfort of their homes, particularly crucial for those in a remote island setting. Before this official launch, the service had already undergone a trial period beginning June 1, 2025, enabling the local population to utilize the platform to address their health concerns.

Background of the Online Service Implementation

Yonaguni Town has long supported the motto of protecting the island’s greatest treasure—its children. The town faces unique challenges related to its geographical isolation and limited healthcare facilities. Despite providing specialized obstetric care through a local clinic and subsidies for transportation costs for prenatal care and childbirth outside the island, the lack of continuous pediatric care and limited opportunities for obstetric consultations remain significant concerns.

During pregnancy, women must attend check-ups more frequently, particularly in the third trimester, necessitating travel to other islands or the mainland, which can amplify anxiety amid sudden health worries. To tackle these issues, Yonaguni Town introduced the online consultation service as a way to overcome geographical barriers using digital technology.

The Online Consultation Service and Its Goals

The online consultation allows parents to access professional healthcare advice anytime, day or night. The goal is to create a reliable safety net for expectant mothers and parents with children, enabling them to connect with specialists without needing to travel, particularly in cases of nighttime emergencies. During the trial phase, participants expressed their gratitude for the timely responses during nighttime inquiries. Many stated that simply knowing they could reach out to a professional provided a sense of reassurance. Moreover, about 90% of survey participants felt their perception of local governmental support improved due to the free access to this service.

The service comprises several features:
  • - 24/7 Consultation: Users can message professionals around the clock both via a website form and receive responses within a day.
  • - Evening Consultations: From 6 PM to 10 PM on weekdays, parents can book 10-minute consultations via video or LINE chat.
  • - Daytime Midwife Consultations: Available from 1 PM to 5 PM on weekdays, midwives can chat via LINE without any prior booking required.
  • - Resource Database: The service will also feature a library of previously answered consultations by doctors and midwives to help parents find relevant information.

The challenge of accessibility to healthcare is a priority for Yonaguni Town, which focuses on enhancing both soft and hard medical services to adapt to modern needs. The town emphasizes supportive initiatives that prevent isolation, ensuring that children and families in this unique environment can thrive and plan for a hopeful future.

About Kids Public

Founded in 2015 by pediatrician Naoya Hashimoto, Kids Public launched its online pediatric consultation service in 2016. The addition of obstetric services led to the expanded offerings, which now include consultative help for over 300,000 inquiries from families. Their broad range of services and collaborations with various municipalities demonstrates the effectiveness of online consultations in providing timely care and support to families during crucial periods of parenthood.

In conclusion, with the official launch of the online obstetric and pediatric consultation service in April 2026, Yonaguni Town is taking a major step towards a future where every family can feel secure and supported in their journey of childbirth and childcare, aiming to be a beacon of care in Japan’s remote regions.
