Liz Hershfield Takes the Helm as Executive Director of CCI
In a significant development for the sustainable fashion landscape, Liz Hershfield, a renowned leader and seasoned expert in sustainability within the fashion industry, has been named the new Executive Director of Cotton Council International (CCI). This announcement comes following the retirement of Bruce Atherley at the end of March, marking a new chapter for CCI and the promotion of American cotton on a global scale.
Gary Adams, President and CEO of the National Cotton Council of America (NCC), emphasized the importance of strong leadership and innovative strategies in ensuring the competitiveness of American cotton. He remarked, "Liz is in an ideal position to enhance COTTON USA™ programs by effectively communicating the benefits of U.S. cotton, providing American cotton producers with more opportunities to thrive in a complex global market."
Hershfield's extensive expertise spans critical areas such as sustainability, global sourcing, product development, and end-to-end supply chain strategy, positioning her to elevate CCI's efforts in championing American cotton. "There has never been a more crucial time to promote American cotton," Hershfield stated. "American cotton boasts an incredible story rooted in quality, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to sustainability, bolstered by the trust earned through reliable partnerships with COTTON USA™."
Throughout her distinguished career, Hershfield has been a pivotal force behind sustainability initiatives for global brands such as J. Crew, Madewell, and Gap Inc. She also founded Green-ish, a consulting agency aimed at assisting companies in navigating the complexities of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management while effectively managing their supply chains.
Her contributions to sustainable fashion have garnered her widespread recognition, including the prestigious Textile Exchange Ryan Young Climate+ Award for her regenerative cotton program that supports U.S. cotton growers. Additionally, she has received The Lead's "The Direct 60" award and been recognized on the Rivet 50 Index for her leadership within the denim industry.
In her role as Executive Director of CCI, Hershfield plans to leverage her vast experience with U.S. cotton and her proven track record in sustainable fashion and supply chain management to globally amplify "The COTTON USA™ Difference"—the superior quality of American cotton and its unparalleled partnership with the global textile supply chain.
