Okayama University Wins Top Award at 8th Okayama Tech Plan Grand Prix
On February 28, 2026, a team from Okayama University led by Professor Kaz Takahashi received the prestigious Grand Prize at the
8th Okayama Tech Plan Grand Prix. This competition, aimed at discovering and nurturing local ventures, took place in Okayama City and was hosted by companies including Chugoku Bank and Libanys.
The award-winning theme presented by the team, named
SPACE SAFE, focused on a revolutionary
miniature photonic sensor for visualizing the charge on spacecraft. Out of 20 competing teams, nine were selected as finalists to present their innovative ideas, leading to the announcement of six corporate awards along with the grand prize.
The technology proposed by SPACE SAFE aims to visualize electrostatic discharge, a significant cause of equipment failures in spacecraft, by utilizing silicon photonics for optical measurement.
