Twelve States Promote Perimenopause Awareness for Women's Health in 2025

September 2025 Declared Perimenopause Awareness Month by 12 States

In a groundbreaking initiative led by the National Menopause Foundation (NMF) and Perry, twelve states across the U.S. have officially declared September 2025 as Perimenopause Awareness Month. This proactive step aims to highlight the often-overlooked challenges that women face during the perimenopausal phase of life—a transition that affects approximately 1.3 million women each year in the United States alone.

This declaration is particularly timely considering that perimenopause—the period leading up to menopause—can span 7 to 10 years and is characterized by numerous symptoms that many women may not recognize or understand. As awareness grows, it becomes increasingly clear that education and support during this phase are vital.

The governors of states including Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, and West Virginia have all issued proclamations, signaling their commitment to raising awareness. These actions seek to ensure women are informed about potential symptoms and have access to the necessary healthcare and support resources.

Claire Gill, the founder and president of NMF, expressed her concern about the lack of conversation surrounding perimenopause, stating, "Perimenopause can cause life-disrupting symptoms for millions of women. The changes that women experience during this natural phase of life are not taught in schools or discussed during routine healthcare visits." This lack of understanding has left many women to navigate their symptoms in silence—often without the help needed to manage their health.

Laura Okafor Crain, the founder and CEO of Perry, emphasized the importance of dialogue around perimenopause: "Perimenopausal symptoms may begin as early as age 35, so it is essential that we talk about it and offer women education and support." This partnership between NMF and Perry aims not only to raise awareness but also to close the public knowledge gap regarding this critical health phase.

To commemorate this momentous month, NMF and Perry will provide educational programming and resources featuring leading clinical experts and influencers focused on perimenopause. Events will be available in both live and virtual formats, allowing broad access to the knowledge and support that women need. Individuals interested in learning more about the events and resources available can visit Perimenopause Awareness.
