Orbis International's Commitment to Enhance Eye Health for 18 Million by 2030

Orbis International's New Commitment to Eye Health

In an ambitious move towards enhancing global health, Orbis International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eye care, has announced a significant investment of approximately $32 million aimed at improving eye health for over 18 million individuals worldwide. This initiative, set to run from 2027 to 2030, seeks to strengthen eye health systems, expand access to quality care, and enhance professional training for more than 250,000 eye health professionals across various regions.

Objectives of the Commitment

The announcement was made during the inaugural Global Summit for Eye Health, hosted by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). This summit gathered various stakeholders, including government officials, NGOs, and private sector representatives, united by a common goal—to address the staggering issue of avoidable visual impairment affecting a billion people globally.

Orbis International's pledge targets specific areas of eye health, including:
1. Workforce Development: A key initiative within this commitment is to address the critical shortage of skilled eye care professionals. Aiming to uplift and develop a workforce capable of delivering quality eye care, Orbis plans to continuously train and support over 250,000 eye health professionals by leveraging its Cybersight platform, one of the foremost digital resources for eye health education. The platform connects professionals globally, enhancing skills through mentorship, AI, and clinical support.

2. Cataract Care Expansion: Cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness globally. To tackle this issue, Orbis will inject $17 million into fortifying the infrastructure supporting cataract care. This includes improving surgical outcomes, boosting institutional capacities, and facilitating timely surgeries that can restore sight. Through partnerships with entities like Alcon, training programs combining simulation, mentorship, and hands-on experience will be developed to ensure high standards in cataract surgery.

3. Integration of AI in Eye Care: Starting in 2027, Orbis plans to partner with Antigua and Barbuda to pioneer AI-assisted screening for diabetic retinopathy as part of routine diabetes care. The aim is to achieve a screening coverage of at least 80% among patients receiving diabetes treatment by 2030. This collaboration embodies the belief that innovative technology can enhance local capacities and ensure early detection of vision-threatening conditions.

Broader Impacts

As the Chief Medical Officer of Orbis International, Dr. Hunter Cherwek pointed out, there exists a pressing need to bridge the gap between the advancements available in modern eye care and the services accessible to patients. Efforts made through this commitment emphasize collaboration, investment, and a concerted dedication to building adequate capacity for delivering quality eye care globally.

Orbis International does not intend this project to be a mere short-term fix. Instead, the approach involves integrating improvements into local healthcare systems to ensure sustainability. By opening direct channels for training, mentorship, and clinical support through Cybersight, Orbis connects with over 200 countries, thereby working towards a world where eye care services are universally accessible.

A Policy Agenda and Future Goals

The commitments made by Orbis align with the St. John's Global Compact for Eye Health, underscoring the importance of accountability, collective ambition, and investment in eye health initiatives. Recognizing the need for equity, the program will prioritize women, girls, and underserved communities, who often bear the brunt of inadequate healthcare.

Orbis International, founded over 40 years ago with the iconic Flying Eye Hospital, continues its mission to prevent blindness and restore sight in areas where eye care is scarce. With new technology and evidence-based practices, the organization aims to ensure that individuals have access to the essential care that can transform their lives.
