Celebrating 58 Years of Connection: ENGINEKO Exhibition at Seibu Shibuya

Celebrating 58 Years of Connection at Seibu Shibuya

As Seibu Shibuya prepares to close its doors after 58 impactful years, a special exhibition featuring the art toy brand ENGINEKO will take place at the main entrance of the Parking Building. This exhibition, themed around the Japanese concept of ‘en,’ will be open from September 22 to September 28, 2026, inviting visitors to reflect on the connections fostered within the store over almost six decades.

ENGINEKO embodies the essence of en, a term that signifies relationships and bonds in Japanese culture. This brand aims to create and nurture connections through art, engaging those who appreciate such bonds. By integrating traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary designs, ENGINEKO seeks to share this unique cultural concept with a global audience.

The Seibu Shibuya store initially opened its doors in April 1968. It quickly became a hub for showcasing emerging designers and new brands, laying the groundwork for cultural phenomena in Shibuya, including the later establishment of Shibuya Parco. The recent closure of large store locations, such as Tokyu Toyoko Store in 2020 and Tokyu Department Store in 2023, marks a significant transformation in the shopping landscape of Shibuya.

Since 2021, the first floor of the Parking Building has served as a vibrant platform connecting new brands with the youth. By 2024, it is projected that the location will have welcomed approximately 1.7 million visitors, showcasing its popularity as a cultural hotspot. Currently, ENGINEKO features three primary works—MUKU, SEI, and IRODORI—available for purchase at CHOOSEBASE SHIBUYA, demonstrating its commitment to connection and creativity.

This entrance has been a literal gateway for people, goods, and cultural exchange for 58 years. The final seven days at this iconic location present a unique opportunity to engage with ENGINEKO and share memories associated with Seibu. Visitors are warmly encouraged to reflect on their experiences and the significance of this shopping destination in Shibuya's rich tapestry of cultural heritage.
