Generous Aid from Taiwan for Kumamoto Earthquake Victims

On August 1, a significant contribution from Taiwan's Fire and Public Welfare Association arrived, aimed at assisting the victims of the Kumamoto earthquake, which struck on July 28, 2026. The Civic Force organization, based in Tokyo and actively involved in disaster relief, is set to distribute these much-needed supplies.

The contribution includes 100 portable beds, 40 pop-up dividers, and 25 folding tables, alongside a monetary donation of 5 million yen. These items are designed for easy transportation and quick setup, using environmentally friendly recycled plastic materials. This thoughtful design addresses immediate needs in evacuation shelters, focusing particularly on privacy and improving sleep conditions for those forcibly displaced by the quake.

This initiative highlights the ongoing support from Taiwan, especially in light of their previous assistance during crises. For example, following the Hualien earthquake in eastern Taiwan on April 3, 2024, similar lightweight beds were utilized in evacuation centers, setting up shelters within hours.

The prompt response of Taiwanese aid organizations garnered significant attention in Japan, demonstrating a successful model of disaster support. Civic Force expresses profound gratitude for Taiwan's kindness and is committed to enhancing the living conditions of those affected by the Kumamoto disaster.

Civic Force was established in 2009 to respond to large-scale disasters in Japan by coordinating efforts among corporations, NGOs, and governmental bodies. From immediate disaster response to long-term recovery, they focus on building resilient communities by sharing experiences and lessons learned from crises. Following the recent Kumamoto earthquake, Civic Force quickly mobilized to support operations in severely impacted areas like Hikawa Town, providing necessary supplies and operational aid for evacuation centers.

Through the Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management (A-PAD), Civic Force collaborates with Taiwanese disaster response organizations, conducting joint training and readiness exercises year-round. This cooperative spirit was evident during the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Hualien and also during the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake, where they provided emergency tents through partnerships with Taiwanese manufacturers.

The Taiwanese Fire and Public Welfare Association is notable as the only non-profit organization in Taiwan that focuses on disaster response efforts. Their initiatives include rescue operations in mountainous regions and waterways, promoting specialized body bags for disaster scenes, testing and developing equipment for save volunteers, and enhancing safety and technical capabilities within fire and rescue teams.
