Japan Airlines and GMO AI Launch Humanoid Robot Trial at Airports

Japan Airlines (JAL) and GMO AI & Robotics are teaming up to launch the first-ever trial of humanoid robots at airports in Japan, starting in May 2026. This collaboration aims to improve efficiency and address labor shortages in ground handling operations, which are critical due to the increasing demand for airline services. Ground handling tasks can be complex, requiring various specialized vehicles and a high degree of skill to ensure safety. Current automation solutions have struggled to adapt to this challenging environment, prompting the exploration of humanoid robots that can operate flexibly.

Background


The aviation industry is currently facing a dual challenge: a growing demand for services due to rising inbound tourism and a diminishing workforce as the working-age population declines. Ground handling operations, including aircraft guidance and baggage loading, require high levels of skill and often lead to physical strain on workers. To overcome these issues, JAL and GMO AI are embarking on a project utilizing humanoid robots to alleviate labor shortages and reduce physical burdens on workers.

The trial will begin in May 2026 and will employ a phased approach for evaluation. Initially, the focus will be on visualizing and analyzing current operational processes at the airport to determine the safest areas for humanoid robots to operate. JAL Ground Services (JGS), established in 1951 and an experienced player in ground handling operations, will leverage its extensive knowledge to define operational requirements and ensure safety compliance. The company aims to identify practical challenges and devise solutions based on its vast experience at major domestic airports.

On the other hand, GMO AI & Robotics will provide the humanoid robots and focus on developing and optimizing the operational programming for these robots. The company’s expertise in deploying humanoid robots in various sectors, along with insights from its recently opened Physical AI Research and Development center, will be crucial in establishing effective and suitable robotic solutions for airport operations.
