Mike Richter Awarded for Environmental Leadership at Green Sports Alliance Summit

Mike Richter Awarded Environmental Leadership Award

On May 7, 2026, the Green Sports Alliance presented Mike Richter with its prestigious Environmental Leadership Award at the annual summit. This honor recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to promote sustainability in the sports sector. Richter, a U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer known for his exemplary career with the New York Rangers, has actively advocated for environmentally conscious practices both within professional hockey and in his role as President of Brightcore Energy.

Richter's achievements reflect a continuous commitment to sustainability. The Green Sports Alliance, dedicated to encouraging environmentally friendly practices in sports, has been honoring innovators in this field for over a decade. Jason Twill, who co-founded the alliance and currently leads Capital for Alterra Mountain Company, praised Richter during the award presentation. He stated, “Mike plays just as hard for the planet as he did on the ice. He is an incredible advocate of sustainability and a fantastic role model.”

Through his company, Brightcore Energy, Richter is making measurable progress in aiding cities and communities throughout the nation in shifting toward clean energy solutions. His active role in promoting the greening of the NHL for more than 15 years has been pivotal, and it continues to inspire future generations.

To highlight the significance of this award, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman delivered a video message congratulating Richter. Bettman himself is a prior recipient of the same award, honored in 2014 for his own contributions to environmental efforts in hockey. He remarked, “On behalf of the NHL, it is my pleasure and privilege to congratulate Mike Richter. Throughout his career, Mike has exemplified leadership long before sustainability became a focus in our industry.” He underscored Richter's crucial participation in launching NHL Green, emphasizing the deep connection between the sport and environmental stewardship.

In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Richter expressed gratitude and humility for receiving the award but also acknowledged the collaborative efforts that contributed to his success. “I'm absolutely humbled and yes, I am surprised. This comes with countless people behind me, standing on their shoulders,” he stated. He highlighted the importance of changing mindsets and leveraging sports as a powerful platform to inspire change.

Richter emphasized the need to focus not only on the emotional and ethical considerations of sustainability but also on the tangible benefits, including physics, health, and economics. “We have truth on our side to get this right,” he noted, encouraging attendees to stay engaged and resilient in the pursuit of making the world a better place. His impassioned call to action resonates with the broader community dedicated to merging sports and sustainability for a greener future.

As this year’s recipient, Mike Richter joins a notable group of previous awardees that includes figures such as Billie Jean King and Allan (Bud) Selig. His recognition at the summit serves as a reminder of the critical role that sports can play in promoting environmental awareness and action.
