Eric Cantor Appointed as CEO of PhRMA Amid Transformative Times for Biopharmaceuticals
Eric Cantor Appointed CEO of PhRMA
In a significant move for the biopharmaceutical industry, Eric Cantor has been appointed as the next President and Chief Executive Officer of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). This transition comes at a critical time for American medical innovation, as the industry faces evolving challenges and opportunities in healthcare. Effective November 9, Cantor will step into the role, bringing with him decades of experience at the crossroads of business and public policy.
Cantor, a former House Majority Leader from Virginia, served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2000 to 2014. Known for his bipartisan collaboration, he played a pivotal role in landmark bills such as the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act, which focused on enhancing federal support for pediatric disease research through the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He was also instrumental in establishing Medicare Part D, significantly increasing drug coverage access for seniors and individuals with disabilities.
In his congressional tenure, Cantor was involved in the 21st Century Cures Act, which provided substantial funding for the NIH and included vital FDA reforms aimed at expediting the approval of new medications. His combined experience in government and the private sector uniquely positions him to lead PhRMA during this integral period.
After leaving Congress, Cantor transitioned to the private sector where he took on the role of Vice Chairman and Managing Director at Moelis & Company. His expertise in advising companies on business strategies, mergers and acquisitions, and navigating the global economic landscape further solidified his qualifications for this leadership position.
Following his appointment, Cantor expressed enthusiasm about joining the ranks of the American biopharmaceutical industry, pointing out its leadership role on a global scale. “PhRMA’s member companies are at the forefront of science and technology, dedicated to innovating treatments and cures for both chronic and rare diseases,” said Cantor. He emphasized his commitment to expanding patient access to medications and harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence to accelerate discovery processes in the field.
Cantor will succeed Stephen J. Ubl, who has effectively led PhRMA since 2015. Ubl coordinated closely with the Board of Directors to ensure a seamless leadership transition, after which he will continue to serve as a strategic advisor until January 15, 2027. The chairman of PhRMA's Board, Rob Davis, commended Ubl for his decade-long advocacy for patients and innovation in medicine, underscoring the substantial challenges faced in healthcare over recent years.
PhRMA represents the leading innovative biopharmaceutical research companies in the United States, which are dedicated to transforming lives through advanced research and development of medicines. Over the past decade, PhRMA member companies have invested over $850 billion into discovering new treatments and cures, supporting nearly five million jobs in the U.S. This investment underscores the paramount goal of ensuring patient access to affordable medicines that prevent, treat, and cure diseases.
As Cantor prepares to officially assume his role, the biopharmaceutical community and policy leaders remain optimistic of his ability to lead the organization effectively during this transformative period. His unique blend of extensive political experience and acumen in global business indicates a promising future for PhRMA as it seeks to navigate the complexities of modern healthcare and innovation.
