The FES Contest®, organized by the Japan Financial Education Support Organization, recently became a groundbreaking addition to Tokyo's children's website. This platform, which was launched in the fiscal year 2022, is designed to cater to the interests and voices of children, continuously updating its content.
With an impressive daily traffic of around 90,000 users and over 200 million page views annually, the website serves as an essential educational tool tailored for youngsters. The inclusion of FES Contest marks a significant milestone as it is the first time a private initiative has been featured on this prominent platform. This opportunity arose after the organization received the Excellent Award in the children's category at the Tokyo-hosted 'Children's Smile Movement Grand Prize'.
Highlighting Financial Education
The FES Contest has been introduced on the 'Award-winning Works' page of Tokyo's children’s web portal as a 'financial education video contest that resonates with elementary school students and transcends generations.' This page not only presents details about the contest but also provides links to the winning entries. For those interested, the page can be accessed
here.
In connection with this recognition, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has also released an introductory video about the FES Contest. This video showcases the contest's mission to teach financial education through video creation, outlining the unique educational program involved in the initiative.
Expanding Educational Opportunities
The Japan Financial Education Support Organization aims to foster an environment conducive to financial education throughout society. By collaborating with Tokyo as an international financial city, the organization intends to broaden the availability of financial education, working alongside schools, businesses, and governmental bodies. The goal is to empower the next generation to actively contemplate and engage with financial matters.
Another exciting development was the successful organization of the first local tournament for the FES Contest in the Tokyo area. This landmark event came about thanks to high demand from teacher ambassadors in public schools. Looking ahead, workshops will be conducted in various districts, aiming to facilitate the largest possible turnout across the nation.
What is the FES Contest?
The FES Contest invites middle and high school students to create videos on financial education and share their innovative work with society. Participants select a theme from the 'eight powers of money'—spending, earning, paying taxes, saving, preparing, gifting, borrowing, and increasing wealth—and develop it into a video format that is understandable for elementary school students.
This educational model promotes depth of understanding not only by 'grasping' concepts but also through the act of 'teaching others', generating a collaborative learning environment involving schools, businesses, and communities. Currently, preparations for the fourth edition of the FES Contest® are underway, with more details to be disclosed on the official website in the forthcoming weeks.
Founded on December 28, 2022, the Japan Financial Education Support Organization operates from Chiyoda, Tokyo. The leadership of the organization includes co-representatives Risa Hirai and Nana Abe, who are dedicated to enhancing financial literacy among the youth. As we move towards a future where financial literacy is not just a privilege but a fundamental skill for all, initiatives like the FES Contest are paving the way to achieve that vision.
