The Boston Globe Launches a New Team for High School Sports Coverage

The Boston Globe's New High School Sports Initiative

On May 7, 2025, The Boston Globe announced the launch of a specific initiative aimed at covering high school sports across Massachusetts. This initiative features a dedicated team of veteran journalists who will elevate the news coverage surrounding the state's athletic programs.

The decision to focus on high school sports comes amid increasing popularity and participation levels within these programs. The Globe’s Sports Editor, Matt Pepin, highlighted the significance of high school sports in the local community, emphasizing that they serve as a foundational step for young athletes aspiring to reach the next level in their sports careers. Pepin stated, "We know the important place high school sports have in the sports landscape in and around Boston, and by dedicating more resources and developing a new coverage strategy, we're making sure Globe readers receive the best coverage of the communities, athletes, and games that matter most to them."

Leading the experienced team is Craig Larson, who brings with him nearly four decades of reporting and editing experience in high school and collegiate sports in New England. Larson is joined by assistant high school sports editor Brendan Kurie and enterprise reporter Matt Porter, who will be contributing in-depth feature articles that chronicle compelling stories throughout the high school sports seasons.

In addition to traditional reporting, the Globe will develop a comprehensive online platform featuring exclusive content including Top 20 rankings, Player of the Week features, nightly score updates, and extensive roundups. The publication will also produce specialized print editions to celebrate standout achievements during fall, winter, and spring sports seasons, with the current All-Scholastics for Winter 2024-25 already available.

The high school sports initiative also plans to deliver dedicated reporting on pivotal events, including an extensive preview of high school football, comprehensive state championship coverage, and insights into local rivalries. Reports will feature live updates during key games, enterprise news pieces focusing on various issues, and comprehensive video and photographic content to engage fans better.

Engagement with Local Communities
This initiative aims to bridge the gap between schools, athletes, parents, and the broader Boston community. The increased visibility of high school sports in the media is crucial for local engagement, fostering a sense of pride and connection among community members, athletes, and their families. High school sports provide not just entertainment but also serve as a source of inspiration and growth for young athletes.

For those interested in following local high school teams more closely, The Boston Globe encourages readers to visit their dedicated sports page at Globe.com/highschoolsports, where fans can easily access all the latest news related to their favorite teams and athletes.
