Discover the Transformative Yukata Experience at Kinoko Onsen
A unique pop-up event is set to rejuvenate the traditional Yukata culture, fusing history with a modern twist. Hosted by YAMATO Lab., a prominent Japanese kimono retailer, the event will take place from August 1 to 16, 2026, at Kinoko Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture, followed by a second location in Kagurazaka, Tokyo, from August 7 to 16, 2026.
About the Event
Titled "宿つなぎ ―逗留の記憶、響く下駄の音―" (Yado Tsunagi – Echoes of Stay, Sounds of Geta), this event focuses on a revival project that repurposes Yukata that have served their purpose in various onsens across Japan. With the aim of conserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Yukata, the initiative showcases designs that meld history with contemporary fashion.
Venue Highlights
Kinoko Onsen, known for its rich history spanning over 1300 years, serves as the perfect backdrop for this event. The concept of the town as a large onsen inn, where visitors traverse the streets adorned in Yukata and Geta, is deeply ingrained in its culture. This poetic setting, where famous literary figures like Naoya Shiga once stayed, will feature unique installations and displays echoing the event’s theme.
During the event, 14 local inns will contribute their retired Yukata to create a vibrant display throughout Kinoko Onsen. Attendees will find special Yukata-themed noren (fabric dividers) positioned at nine key locations across the onsen town, inviting guests to explore the warm atmosphere in traditional attire. Simultaneously, a pop-up space called MMM will host a showcase and sale of Yukata-inspired items, blending history with wearable craftsmanship.
What to Expect
YAMATO Lab. is set to launch a new product line featuring the "八つ折れ下駄" (Yatsuore Geta), designed specifically for comfort and ease of walking. These unique Geta incorporate a distinctive cut into the footbed, ensuring a snug fit while walking. Priced at 30,800 yen (inclusive of tax), this new offering honors traditional motifs while providing modern comfort.
In addition to the Geta, a comprehensive lineup of 12 items will include shirts, pants, and accessories constructed from repurposed Yukata fabric. The event emphasizes sustainability and creativity, as each article reflects the unique history of the Yukata it originated from. The distinctive prints and patterns ensure that no two pieces are the same, allowing attendees to wear a piece of history.
Collaborations with Local Brands
The Kinoko Onsen event will also feature exclusive collaborations with popular local food brands. Attendees can enjoy limited-edition items from tea brand SAN, pastry cafe PARADI, and milk producer TANGO Jersey Farm. These collaborations not only enhance the event’s offering but also highlight the diverse culinary culture of the region, providing guests with a multi-sensory experience.
At the Kagurazaka venue, visitors who purchase over 8,800 yen will receive SAN’s tea in a specially designed package, further underscoring the event's theme of blending tradition with contemporary experiences.
The Essence of Yado Tsunagi
YADOTSUNAGI embodies more than just a fashion statement; it is a narrative that weaves together history, sustainability, and culture. This initiative has garnered support from 35 onsens and institutions across Japan, revitalizing traditional Yukata and reintroducing them to modern lifestyles. Each piece recalls the spirit of its past while adapting to contemporary sensibilities.
