Hydrogen-Roasted Coffee from Laos: A Fresh Take
Laos is now venturing into an innovative coffee project that champions a unique roasting process using hydrogen. Lao Green Hydrogen Co., Ltd. (LGH) has launched the pre-sale of hydrogen-roasted coffee through the crowdfunding platform Makuake, embracing the tagline that this coffee connects the true essence of Laos to the future.
The Spirit of Laos in Every Cup
Set in the beautiful Bolaven Plateau in southern Laos, known for its substantial temperature variations and fertile soil, LGH aims to highlight the rich flavors of locally grown Arabica coffee beans. The project’s roots lie in the delicate cherries harvested from the region, embodying the model of sustainability by working hand-in-hand with local farmers throughout the entire process—from cultivation to harvesting, sorting, and roasting—all conducted domestically.
This approach emphasizes the philosophy of preserving Laos's value by retaining production within the country, thereby generating economic opportunities for local communities. The cultivation of coffee has become an essential industry that supports regional livelihoods, providing sustenance and income for many families.
A Revolutionary Roasting Method
The star of this project is the hydrogen roasting process, which is set to debut in 2026 with small-scale roasters on Makuake. This method leverages hydrogen as the heat source, significantly reducing the production of impurities like soot during roasting. This clean environment is believed to enhance the natural flavor profiles of the coffee beans, resulting in a cup that is both crisp and inviting.
The hallmark of this hydrogen-roasted coffee is its refreshing taste, described as clear with a lingering finish that makes it easy to drink multiple cups. This lightness and lack of bitterness create a naturally inviting experience, perfect for daily enjoyment.
Post-harvest, the coffee beans undergo meticulous sorting and drying using local resources, ensuring that each bean reflects the care and quality of local practices. With LGH's establishment in the Pakse-Japan SME SEZ, opportunities for further business development only broaden.
The Potential of Hydrogen in Coffee Roasting
While the influence of hydrogen on flavor profiles remains largely uncharted, LGH speculates that the soot-free flames of hydrogen create a purer heat environment, possibly contributing to the crisp and clean flavor their coffee boasts. Additionally, LGH is gradually progressing towards a greener hydrogen transition, aiming to incorporate larger roasting machines using green hydrogen by 2027.
This transition is set to revolutionize not only local coffee production but also the overarching energy landscape in Laos, which is celebrated for its robust hydropower resources.
Gaining International Recognition
The innovative combination of hydrogen and coffee has recently garnered attention both domestically and abroad. Notably featured in NHK's news programs, including "Asa-nichihon" and international segments of NHK World, this project embodies the potential for sustainability and cutting-edge technology to intersect harmoniously in the beverage industry.
A Coffee Experience that Connects
Makuake participants can look forward to not just the freshly roasted coffee made from Laotian Arabica beans but also added experiences, like tasting events and online workshops led by coffee expert and roaster Taizou Iwasaki, to delve deeper into the project’s rich background.
Through a simple cup of coffee, we invite you to explore Laos's rich natural landscapes, the lives of local farmers, and the future of energy. LGH is committed to fostering this cycle by promoting the connection between Laos and Japan, while steering the coffee industry towards sustainability.
