Introduction to 'Suki ga Ippai'
On December 15, the much-anticipated poetry collection titled 'Suki ga Ippai' will be released, featuring a remarkable exchange of letters written in verse between esteemed poet Shuntaro Tanikawa and acclaimed novelist Kanako Nishi. This collection includes the poetic correspondence that was serialized in the childcare magazine
PriPri.
A Meeting of Minds
The project began in May 2022, allowing the two literary icons to send poems back and forth, a dialogue designed to resonate with children encountering the magic of words for the first time while also striking a chord with adult readers. The ongoing exchange lasted over two years, culminating in a publication that reflects not just a literary collaboration, but also a deeply personal connection between the two writers.
Tragically, Tanikawa passed away in November 2024, leaving behind his final poem titled 'Suki', dedicated to children. In response, Nishi crafted an original piece, which not only serves as a heartfelt reply within the book but also crystallizes the essence of their shared affection and admiration, ultimately giving the collection its name, 'Suki ga Ippai'.
The Creative Process
Nishi's exquisite illustrations accompany these poems, enriching the reader’s experience and further immersing them in the enchanting world of poetry crafted by both authors. The artwork breathes life into the words, serving as a visual interpretation that enhances the emotional landscape of each poem. The book’s design is masterfully executed by Seichi Suzuki, ensuring that this collection stands out not only for its heartfelt content but also for its aesthetic appeal.
Ideal for All Ages
'Suki ga Ippai' is more than just a children's poetry book; it captures the universal joy found in language, making it suitable for children and adults alike. The aim was to craft a joyful workspace for young readers to interact with language, sparking their imagination and encouraging a lifelong love for poetry. Nishi’s reflections in the afterword detail her thoughts on engaging children with poetry, inviting them to experience the delight of language while also resonating with the experiences of grown-ups.
