Fostering Peace Through Virtual Connections

On June 29, 2025, the university executed an international virtual exchange program titled "Peace Through Virtual Exchange" in collaboration with Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in Ukraine.

Objectives of the Program


The event, led by esteemed faculty members, Lecturer Susan Meiki and Associate Professor Tim Cleminson from the Graduate School of Education, is intricately aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, it aims to fulfill Goal 4.7, which advocates for education that fosters sustainable development, and Goal 16, which calls for peace and justice for all.

Student Involvement


This groundbreaking initiative welcomed 20 students from diverse disciplines, including literature, economics, pharmacy, and the Global Discovery Program. The focus of their engagement centered around the theme of reducing confrontational language and fostering peace. The students actively learned about the impactful role that language plays in media representation, particularly how biased languages can lead to conflict and misunderstanding.

Divided into international mixed teams, the participants took on a significant project where they rephrased confrontational news articles into neutral expressions. This hands-on experience not only enriched their understanding of media literacy but also exposed them to the paramount importance of communication in peacebuilding.

A Reality Check


During the second workshop, on June 4, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine was poignantly highlighted, as some students participated from bomb shelters amidst air raids. Additionally, a student from Myanmar shared insights into the media situations in their home country, which further underlined the urgent need for peace education. It became clear to all involved how empathy and understanding can transcend borders, fostering a broader awareness of global issues.

Future Initiatives


Looking ahead, Okayama University plans to expand this program by including students from the State University of Maringá in Brazil, aiming for a wider international impact. As a central hub for unique research, Okayama University continues to advocate for collaborative education, and this program is just one of many initiatives expected to promote peace and global understanding.
