Kansas City University and Its Economic Impact
Kansas City University (KCU), a notable not-for-profit health sciences institution located in Kansas City and Joplin, Missouri, has released the results of an extensive economic impact study conducted by Tripp Umbach, a well-regarded consulting firm. According to the analysis based on Fiscal Year 2025 data, KCU generated a staggering $498.9 million in economic impact nationwide. This economic activity supported 3,216 jobs and contributed an impressive $25.9 million in state and local taxes.
The dual campuses of KCU have positioned it as a significant economic engine for the Kansas City metropolitan area and the wider bi-state territory of Missouri and Kansas. Notably, within the Kansas City Metro area alone, KCU operations generated around $225.3 million in economic output, facilitated 1,452 jobs, and added $11.7 million to local tax revenues. In Joplin, operations accounted for $178.4 million in local economic output while supporting 1,150 jobs and contributing $9.3 million in taxes.
The university’s vital role extends beyond employment and tax contributions. KCU also plays a pivotal figure in shaping healthcare capabilities by educating over 2,000 medical and health professionals annually and employing nearly 600 faculty and staff.
Broader Implications of KCU Alumni
Beyond the direct economic contributions of KCU, the impact of its alumni expands significantly across the United States. With more than 10,359 physician alumni, a substantial number serve in healthcare across the nation, with 2,568 practicing within the bi-state region. Notably, the report highlights that these alumni collectively create an astounding $33.3 billion in economic impact across the country while supporting approximately 176,130 healthcare jobs. Furthermore, those who practice in medically underserved regions provide approximately $13.1 billion in healthcare cost savings, emphasizing improved access to primary care and reduced emergency visits.
A secondary analysis conducted by the National Center for the Analysis of Healthcare Data underlines KCU’s significance in medical education. Currently, KCU ranks as the fourth-largest medical school in the country in terms of class size, leading physician production within Missouri and contributing significantly in Kansas as well. The university's role in addressing physician shortages is critical, especially in rural and underserved areas.
