June 25th: A Day to Honor Seafarers and Their Crucial Roles

June 25th: A Day to Honor Seafarers and Their Crucial Roles

Every year on June 25, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) celebrates Day of the Seafarer, a day dedicated to recognizing the unwavering commitment and significant contributions of maritime professionals. In Japan, where approximately 99.6% of trade by weight is reliant on maritime shipping, this day is especially important as it shines a light on the essential roles seafarers play in supporting daily life and industrial activities.

While these dedicated individuals work tirelessly behind the scenes, their contributions often go unnoticed. The domestic shipping sector is responsible for transporting around 80% of essential industrial materials within the country, further emphasizing the vital importance of these unseen professionals. However, the lack of visible acknowledgment leads to a societal gap in understanding their roles and value.

In response to this, AIS Co., Ltd. based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has initiated a project aimed at increasing awareness and appreciation for seafarers through its motto, “Visible Gratitude for Invisible Work.” This initiative seeks to raise recognition of Day of the Seafarer and ensure it becomes a recognized observance throughout Japan. The project will cultivate an environment where both the public and organizations can express their gratitude towards seafarers who uphold the maritime industry.

Key Initiatives of the Project

1. Collecting and Sharing Gratitude Messages
AIS invites everyone to send messages of thanks and support to seafarers. Contributions will be accepted until May 20, 2026, with the collected messages scheduled for publication on the YouTube Torakuru Channel in June 2026. This initiative aims to start a public dialogue about the significance of maritime work and honor the unsung heroes silently supporting our economy.
- Send Your Message (Individuals)
- Send Your Message (Organizations)

2. Free Distribution of Posters and Promotional Goods
To emphasize the importance of this project, AIS offers complimentary promotional posters and pens to organizations that agree with the initiative's goals. Those wishing to participate can sign up through the provided form, but supplies are limited.
- Request Promotional Materials

3. Project Logo Development
AIS also provides a custom project logo available for free use by organizations for internal display, public relations, and events. Two distinct logos capture the essence of this initiative: one representing the essence and symbolism of Seafarer Day, and another embodying the message of “Visible Gratitude for Invisible Work.”

4. Photo Spot at Sea Japan
During Sea Japan (April 22–24, 2026, at Tokyo Big Sight), AIS will set up a photo opportunity dedicated to Day of the Seafarer at its booth. Attendees are encouraged to visit and participate!

Supported by Notable Institutions

As of April 15, 2026, key institutions supporting this initiative include Toba National College of Maritime Technology, Japan Shipowners' Association, Japan Captain's Association, and Japan Marine Engine Officers Association.

AIS's Commitment to the Maritime Industry

AIS has a long-standing commitment to support the maritime industry by providing core systems for shipping. They recognize that the workforce of seafarers forms the backbone of this critical sector. Through this project, AIS aims to foster a societal appreciation and respect for these workers and contribute positively to the sustainable development of the maritime industry.

This important initiative is not only about gratitude but also encourages a deeper understanding of the maritime industry, highlighting how essential these underwater warriors are to the global economy. Let's join hands to celebrate those who work behind the scenes in the vast oceans.
