Long Island University Commemorates Walt Frazier at 2026 Centennial Event
Long Island University Celebrates Legends at Commencement
On May 16, 2026, Long Island University (LIU) honored the legendary Walt "Clyde" Frazier during its Centennial Commencement ceremony held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The esteemed basketball icon and Hall of Famer was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, a testament to his profound impact on sports and culture.
This monumental event not only marked LIU's 100th anniversary but also highlighted Frazier's contributions to the New York sports scene. Known for his captivating presence, Frazier has transcended the sports realm, becoming recognized as one of the most distinctive personalities in basketball history. As the voice of the New York Knicks, his signature commentary and stylish persona have left an indelible mark on both new and old generations of basketball fans.
Drafted by the Knicks in 1967, Frazier played a pivotal role in securing two NBA championships for the team. His career accolades include seven NBA All-Star selections, spots on both the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams, and induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. Notably, he was the first former player to be inducted into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2022.
As he addressed the graduates of LIU Brooklyn, LIU Hudson, LIU Global, and the College of Pharmacy, Frazier shared wisdom from his illustrious career, urging the Class of 2026 to continue striving for their dreams. He emphasized, "Keep striving and thriving. Keep believing and achieving. And never stop reaching for your dreams."
The ceremony was a reflection of excellence and motivation, meant to inspire the next generation of leaders.
LIU President Kimberly R. Cline expressed pride in honoring Frazier during this historic occasion, acknowledging his everlasting impact not just in basketball but in various other arenas such as broadcasting, entrepreneurship, mentorship, and community service. Frazier's philanthropic efforts through The Walt Frazier Foundation, established in 1985 to assist children through mentorship and education, showcase his commitment to uplift and inspire youth.
In conjunction with Frazier’s honor, the excitement for LIU Men’s Basketball continued to rise. Under the leadership of Head Coach Rod Strickland, a former NBA player with 17 years of experience, the LIU Sharks captured the NEC Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, further establishing the program's significance in the landscape of college basketball.
Earlier in the year, Frazier participated in a special event at LIU—"New York Knicks Night," which honored another Knicks legend, Bernard King, celebrating the deep roots between LIU’s basketball program and the history of New York basketball.
As Frazier continues to inspire both on and off the court with his incredible career and philanthropic pursuits, LIU recognizes him as a perfect exemplar of the values that the University wishes to instill in its graduates: leadership, individuality, and service to others. This ceremony highlights the commitment LIU has towards eulogizing figures that have championed these ideals throughout the university’s century-long legacy.
Long Island University, established in 1926, serves over 16,000 students across its campuses in Long Island and Brooklyn. It is recognized nationally for its commitment to experiential learning and is home to a vast network of alumni who are influential in various industries around the globe, embodying the university's ethos of excellence and innovation.
As LIU embarks on its next chapter, celebrating its legacy and the impact of figures like Walt Frazier only strengthens its bonds within the community of sports, education, and civic engagement.
