Julius Meinl Expands Its Sustainable Coffee Line with Compostable Capsules at HostMilano

Julius Meinl Unveils Compostable Capsules at HostMilano

Julius Meinl, a renowned premium coffee brand, made a significant stride towards sustainability by launching its compostable coffee capsules, part of the double-certified Originals Bio Fairtrade line at the recent HostMilano event. This move highlights the company's commitment to providing high-quality coffee solutions that are also environmentally friendly, catering to the hospitality sector.

Expanding the Originals Bio Fairtrade Line

The compostable capsules are designed for professional settings and will debut with a blend named Danube Delight. This mix promises a rich and intense flavor profile, combining dark chocolate notes with hints of nutmeg. The Originals Bio Fairtrade line showcases the brand's rich history—over 160 years of roasting coffee, underlining their dedication to exceptional craftsmanship.

Customers in the B2B domain can now trust Julius Meinl for premium organic coffee sourced ethically, aiming to not only deliver a remarkable taste experience but also support sustainable practices within the coffee industry. The double certification assures coffee farmers of a stable minimum price, along with a Fairtrade premium and organic differential, enabling them to invest in their communities and sustainability initiatives.

Commitment to Sustainability

Lazar Glasnovic, the Field Quality Director at Julius Meinl, emphasized the brand's intent: "We wanted to go beyond the traditional concept of 'from bean to cup' and take a significant step towards closing the loop on capsule coffee experiences." The introduction of compostable capsules aims to offer not only exceptional flavors but also a sustainable choice for customers concerned about environmental impact.

With industrial composting designed to break down organic materials efficiently, these capsules will yield nutrient-rich compost, enhancing soil health and fertility. This progress is essential as traditional landfill conditions can release methane—a greenhouse gas significantly more harmful than carbon dioxide.

Innovative Capsule Design

Developed in partnership with Gualapack and FLO, these capsules are compatible with Lavazza Blue® systems and each contains 11.1 grams of coffee. The top of the capsule is crafted from a combination of paper, a cellulose-based metalized layer, and PLA sealing layer, offering high protection and excellent dispensing performance. The body comprises C-PLA, a bioplastic that notably reduces environmental footprint, in addition to PVOH, known for its effective oxygen barrier properties.

This design has undergone rigorous testing to guarantee its compostability, and it bears the OK compost INDUSTRIAL certification from TÜV Austria, a leading international body in testing and certification.

Professional Quality, Convenient Use

Julius Meinl's professional capsule range allows hospitality venues like hotels, offices, and restaurants to deliver barista-quality coffee experiences easily. Each capsule contains a richer coffee blend to ensure a more intense aroma and fuller taste—achieving professional café quality at the touch of a button.

With both classic and now compostable options, partners can effortlessly provide their clients with extraordinary coffee on demand, ensuring a consistent experience without compromise. The capsules pair seamlessly with new machines calibrated for precise extraction, delivering remarkable coffee experiences.

A Legacy of Quality

Founded in 1862, Julius Meinl stands as one of the world’s oldest coffee roasters, becoming an emblematic name in Vienna's coffee culture. The family’s five-generational commitment to quality remains steadfast. With over a century and a half of experience in sourcing, blending, and roasting, Julius Meinl products are now available in over 50,000 hotels, cafés, and restaurants across 70 countries, alongside a growing number of retail outlets. Their dedication to sustainable practices for a better coffee future continues to shape the brand's legacy.
