An Enchanting Night at a Former Temple in Kochi: A Cultural Gathering

An Enchanting Night at a Former Temple in Kochi

Recently, a surreal event took place in Susaki City, Kochi Prefecture, where around 50 participants, including international guests, gathered in a former temple to celebrate culture, food, and community. The gathering was not just a meeting of local residents but also a melting pot of cultures with attendees from Egypt, Indonesia, Canada, the USA, Sweden, and Thailand.

The atmosphere was electric as people shared their stories, experiences, and, most importantly, their culinary delights during a potluck dinner. Locals prepared an array of delicious dishes that amazed visitors, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the warm hospitality and exquisite flavors that Kochi has to offer. The event also drew friendly faces from nearby Kotohira Town in Kagawa Prefecture, adding to the communal spirit of the night.

The organization behind the gathering, `Tomari-na`, is based on the core philosophy of connecting Susaki with the world while promoting collaboration across Shikoku Island. As the demand for inclusivity has grown, with an increasing number of families and foreign visitors expressing interest, plans for future events will prioritize better facilities and resources.

One of the highlights of the evening was a series of presentations from local members of the community. The first presenter, artisan Hamada, showcased breathtaking bamboo crafts made from Susaki's unique Torabamboo while discussing the pressing issues regarding local bamboo forests. Following him, Hidaka shared insights into his musical activities, which leverage the sounds of Susaki, captivating everyone present.

Furthermore, guests from Indonesia enlightened attendees about Ramadan, fostering a deeper understanding of cultural traditions. Reina, a member of `Tomari-na`, shared her travel experiences and revealed why she chose to establish her company in Susaki, emphasizing the importance of highlighting the region's charms globally.

After the presentations concluded, the participants transitioned into an after-party music festival. The show began with DJ Porco from Shimanoto Town in Kochi, igniting the floor with energetic beats which got everyone dancing. At a suggestion from the Kotohira guests, a group photo was taken to capture the memorable night despite a few attendees leaving early.

The after-party continued with a performance by local kalimba artist Hotori, whose tender melodies mesmerized the audience, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. The night wrapped up with Hidaka delivering a unique DJ performance where natural sounds intertwined beautifully with electronic music, bringing a profound relaxation to all present.

Adding a personal touch to the celebration, attendees organized a surprise birthday party for Hidaka as he turned 25 at midnight, bringing joy and camaraderie to the occasion.

As the evening drew to a close, gratitude filled the air. The members of `Tomari-na`, local supporters from Kochi, and friends who traveled from afar expressed their heartfelt appreciation for one another. This event not only served as a report on `Tomari-na` activities but also as a bright reminder of the vibrant community spirit that exists in Susaki.
