Costa Rica's Pineapple: The World's Leading Export and a Natural Wellbeing Ambassador

Costa Rica's Pineapple: A Natural Wellbeing Ambassador

Costa Rica is renowned for its pineapples, which go beyond being just a tropical delight; they symbolize wellness and sustainability. This Central American nation has positioned itself as the world’s leading exporter of pineapple, showcasing its commitment to quality, innovation, and responsible agricultural practices.

Between January and September 2025, Costa Rican pineapple exports reached an impressive value of $992 million, with over 1.5 million tons shipped worldwide. Pineapples account for 35% of Costa Rica’s agricultural exports, reaching 44 international markets, including significant shares in the United States (54%), Belgium (12%), and Spain (8%). The increasing popularity of these pineapples reflects a growing consumer preference for products that emphasize taste, traceability, and wellness.

Laura López, CEO of the Trade and Investment Promotion Agency of Costa Rica (PROCOMER), states, "The pineapples from Costa Rica are now a benchmark for exceptional quality worldwide. Their taste, quality, and innovation have made them a favorite in leading global markets. In a highly competitive environment, we work to maintain and expand this leadership by opening new opportunities for our exporters and presenting the world with products that embody health, sustainability, and trust."

The cultivation of these pineapples occurs primarily in the northern, southern, and Caribbean regions of Costa Rica, where the tropical climate and fertile soils provide ideal growing conditions. The pineapple sector generates over 81,000 direct and indirect jobs, stimulating rural economies and strengthening agricultural communities, all connected by a shared commitment to production care and quality.

Costa Rica's leadership in pineapple production is supported by strict ecological responsibility and exceptional quality standards. The fruits are grown under certifications such as GlobalG.A.P. and Rainforest Alliance, guaranteeing sustainable agricultural practices, ecosystem protection, and community welfare. Following the harvest, every pineapple is meticulously handled to ensure that it reaches consumers in optimal condition—fresh, safe, and bursting with natural flavor.

To promote the authentic flavors of Costa Rica abroad, the country has launched the international campaign “The Natural Choice,” showcasing the versatility of Costa Rican pineapples in a dedicated Brand Store on Amazon. This campaign aims to present wellness and quality, supported by a series of in-store tasting events across Europe, where consumers can experience the freshness and flavor of these remarkable fruits firsthand.

In Spain, tastings will be held in Bonpreu supermarkets from November 14 to 29 at 21 locations. In Germany, tasting events will run from November 17 to December 14 across 16 markets at Handelshof/Edeka. Likewise, consumers in the UK will get a taste of the pineapples' unique sweetness and freshness via Morrison (November 24-30) and Tesco (starting December 10).

As part of this promotional tour, Madrid will host a live cooking show featuring Costa Rican chef Luis Guillermo Castro, who will prepare traditional dishes using pineapple, cassava, and bananas. This event, which invites journalists, food industry representatives, and partners such as AhorraMás, Bonpreu, and Cultivar S.A., is set for November 27 at El Gusto es Nuestro, located at C/ Puente la Reina 25, Las Tablas.

Beyond their sweetness and freshness, Costa Rican pineapples are also functional foods, rich in Vitamin C, bromelain, antioxidants, and minerals that support immune health and general wellness. Available fresh (including a pink variety), frozen, dried, or canned, Costa Rica continues to establish itself as a reliable source of products that promote wellbeing, reflecting a nation that acts sustainably and earns consumer trust.
