ADF Art Gallery Project Vol.39 - Rin Ito's "Depth"
The ADF (Aoyama Design Forum) is thrilled to announce the 39th installment of its Art Gallery Project, featuring a thought-provoking solo exhibition by the artist Rin Ito. Titled "Depth," this exhibition will take place from March 17 to March 31, 2026, at the GARDE Gallery in Omotesando, Tokyo.
Rin Ito's artwork invites viewers to contemplate the nuances of existence through themes of freedom, expression, motion and stillness, and the dualities of black and white. According to Ito, what we perceive is merely a surface. The ink sinks, lines become ambiguous, and writing may lose its meaning, all while diving deep into the depths of one’s mind. The smudges, fading, and layering of ink serve as remnants of a journey that disrupts our rationality and delves into the subconscious. It’s not about finding answers; it's about exploring the depth itself, the moments preceding meaning and the formless aspect of thoughts. Ito articulates this complex relationship through his striking pieces.
Featured Works
One notable piece is
"網の手" (Net of Hands), where the viewer is drawn to the interplay of dropping and ascending elements. The composition combines lines, circles, black and white elements into a rich tapestry of interconnected forms.
His work
"draw a line 無駄なこと" (Draw a Line: Pointless Things) emphasizes the value in what might seem insignificant. Ito passionately dedicates his energy to exploring the notion of 'pointless'—an idea often disregarded yet demanding patience to pursue. As humans, we strive to find meaning, and in the absence of it, anxiety often creeps in. Ito's exploration of seemingly wasted moments reflects on the ephemeral nature of time and existence.
In his piece
"美" (Beauty), Ito plays with symmetry and perception, illustrating how 'beauty' can be understood and appreciated from various angles. He further explores the tension between opposing forces in
"天上天下" (Above and Below), where the energy that propels us upward can simultaneously drive us downward.
Ito's work
"マド" (Window) contemplates the viewpoints that exist between the internal and external worlds, prompting viewers to reflect on their own perspectives. His piece
"進" (Progress) embodies the relationship between words and non-verbal expressions, suggesting that the meaning and form can coexist in a dynamic dance of perception.
With each artwork, Ito weaves together simplicity and complexity, leaving spaces in his compositions that allow silence and movement to resonate with viewers. For instance, his work
"自由" (Freedom) metaphorically captures the essence of entanglement and liberation.
Artist Background
Rin Ito began composing poetry in his student days, finding solace in the words written on pages, which resonated with others. His dialogue with the late poet Shuntarō Tanikawa deepened his understanding of the purpose behind sharing words. Transitioning from pen to brush, Ito now artfully blends the serene essence of black ink with the white canvas, delving into a realm where stillness meets motion.
Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1977, his international exposure began in 2004 with participation in an international biennale in Spain, where he showcased short poems, thus conveying Japanese culture to a broader audience. His immersion in diverse artistic expressions, particularly witnessing impactful calligraphic performances, shifted his path back to Japan and subsequently, Nagano City.
Ito has since engaged in spontaneous street performance art, avant-garde calligraphy, and teaching, alongside fulfilling numerous requests for commercial calligraphy from organizations and businesses. His pursuit of a unique writing style continues to evolve.
