Embracing Tradition and Innovation with TANGO Chirimen
From July 23 to August 5, and from July 23 to August 19, Mitsukoshi Ginza is celebrating the elegance of Kyoto’s TANGO chirimen through its unique greeting cards. This initiative is part of the
Mitsukoshi Regional Co-Creation Project, designed to promote local products and embody Japan’s beauty. The greeting cards will serve as accessible souvenirs for both domestic and international tourists.
Introducing 'Kissho Kaden KYOTO'
The name
Kissho Kaden signifies auspicious patterns drawn from traditional kimono fabrics known as
Kogire. These vintage textile pieces are framed with Japanese paper, creating a divine combination. In collaboration with the city of Yosa in Kyoto, Mitsukoshi will incorporate TANGO chirimen textiles into these distinct greeting cards that reflect rich Japanese culture.
Mitsukoshi's Vision: Preserving Tradition
TANGO chirimen, a silk fabric unique to the northern region of Kyoto, has a history spanning over 300 years. This intricate weaving technique has faced challenges in recent years, primarily due to the decline in kimono demand, leading to the loss of weavers and the expertise needed to pass down these cultural techniques. Recognizing this predicament, Mitsukoshi has developed greeting cards utilizing TANGO chirimen as a way to maintain and revive traditional crafts.
Creating New Value
In light of the decreased demand for kimono, this project aims to diversify the utility of TANGO chirimen. By producing greeting cards, Mitsukoshi facilitates an opportunity for both Japanese and international guests to uplift the beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and take it home as a tangible souvenir.
A Masterpiece Crafted in Kyoto
Nearly all design, weaving, dyeing, and paper processing for the
Kissho Kaden cards takes place within Kyoto, encapsulating the essence of this region's craftsmanship. The project is supervised by
EBRU, a design firm founded by three alumni from Kanazawa College of Art, specializing in culture and craft. They aim to tackle the challenges facing Japanese manufacturing through public engagement in cultural arts and the development of innovative products like the
EARMIND earphone brand.
TANGO Chirimen: A Cultural Gem
The exquisite TANGO chirimen fabric is celebrated for its fine, textured surface and beautiful sheen. It represents not only skilled artisanal techniques but also holds significant cultural importance. The greeting cards will feature a variety of designs, such as traditional motifs of foxes and deities and stunning cherry blossoms (Sakura Kasumi Goshokai), each also featuring TANGO chirimen fabric.
