Palsystem Group Transitions 50 Facilities to 100% Renewable Energy for CO2 Reduction

Palsystem Group's Commitment to Sustainability

The Palsystem Group, which includes Palsystem Tokyo, Palsystem Kanagawa, Palsystem Chiba, and Palsystem Saitama, has taken a noteworthy step towards sustainability. Starting April 2023, these co-ops have switched the power used at 50 of their facilities, including distribution centers and welfare facilities, to 100% renewable energy. This initiative aims to support their ambitious target of reducing CO2 emissions by 46% by the fiscal year 2030, compared to the 2013 fiscal year levels.

Transition to Renewable Energy

This transition to renewable energy has been facilitated through a collaboration with Palsystem Denki, a subsidiary of the Palsystem Federation. They implemented a new contract under the “Zero CO2 Plan” to ensure that all power consumed at these facilities comes from renewable sources. The change impacts 15 distribution centers and nine welfare facilities in Tokyo, 10 distribution centers and three welfare facilities in Kanagawa, six distribution centers and one store along with three welfare facilities in Chiba, and three distribution centers in Saitama. In total, these 50 locations will achieve zero CO2 emissions in their power consumption.

Palsystem Denki secured the necessary energy supply for this program through a long-term agreement with HSE Corporation, which manages the Hirabari Wind Farm in Aomori. This facility features 14 wind turbines and takes advantage of the strong coastal winds in the region. The total output of the wind farm is estimated at 32.2 megawatts, generating enough electricity to power approximately 15,000 households, while offsetting around 35,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

Future Goals and Sustainable Practices

The Palsystem Group is committed to a broader strategy that includes the potential for additional clean energy sources. If any power shortfalls occur, they have established agreements with various hydroelectric plants to ensure a steady supply of renewable energy. This will maintain their commitment to 100% renewable energy supply across all facilities.

By aiming to convert over 70% of their total consumption to renewable resources through this plan, the Palsystem Group continues to reinforce its sustainability efforts. As part of their long-term vision towards environmental stewardship, the group will also explore collaborations with diverse organizations to expand their sustainable energy practices.

“Our move to renewable energy represents not only a significant turning point for our group but also our dedication to being a part of the solution against climate change,” stated Reiko Matsuno, the chairperson of Palsystem Tokyo. “By collectively working towards reducing CO2 emissions, we are contributing to a more sustainable future for the communities we serve.”

The group's ultimate goal remains clear: to reduce their CO2 emissions by 46% by the end of fiscal year 2030, demonstrating that collective action can lead to meaningful change in the fight against climate change.
