Discover the Wonders of Saitama's Marine Life
This summer, children in grades 5 and 6 will have an exciting opportunity to connect with the marine world through the
Saitama Mahaze Survey organized by the
Umihito Project in Saitama Prefecture on
August 6-7. This event is part of a broader initiative aimed at fostering the appreciation of Japan's beautiful oceans and ensuring their legacy for the next generation. Participants will engage in an immersive, hands-on learning experience focused on the
Mahaze fish, a species that connects Saitama to the sea.
Event Overview
The
Saitama Mahaze Survey is an experiential learning event spanning two days, designed specifically for elementary school students in Saitama and neighboring prefectures. This year, participants will be educated about the Mahaze fish, engaged in fishing activities around
Tokyo Bay, and gain insights into marine culture and environmental issues.
Program Details
- - Date: August 6 (Wednesday) to August 7 (Thursday), 2025
- - Location: Televama Co., Ltd., 6-36-4 Tokiwa, Urawa, Saitama
- - Access: Conveniently located, just a 20-minute walk from JR Urawa Station.
Participants will gather at
Televama at 8:45 AM. The program includes:
- 9:00 AM: Learning about local fish species hosted at Televama.
- 11:00 AM: Bus transfer to the Toyo Fish Museum where they'll explore the Mahaze fish and weather impacts.
- 5:00 PM: Transfer to accommodation, followed by dinner.
- 8:00 PM: Briefing for the next day's fishing activities.
- 7:00 AM: Departure from the hotel.
- 8:00 AM: Experience fishing for Mahaze aboard a traditional
Yakatabune boat.
- 1:30 PM: Learning wrap-up and discussions.
- 4:00 PM: Return bus trip.
- 5:00 PM: Arrival back at Televama for dispersal.
How to Participate
This event is free of charge, making it an ideal opportunity for summer research projects! Interested students should sign up as slots are limited and will be filled on a lottery basis in case of high demand.
