Saudi Arabia Takes the Lead in Global Coral Reef Conservation with ICRI Secretariat Launch

Saudi Arabia Takes the Helm in Coral Reef Conservation

In a significant development for marine ecosystem preservation, Saudi Arabia has officially assumed control of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) secretariat for its 14th term. This momentous occasion, which took place on January 9, 2025, heralds a new era in the global conservation of coral reefs, these essential ecosystems that sustain a staggering 25% of the world's marine biodiversity.

The ICRI, formed in 1994, now comprises 102 members, including representatives from 45 countries, collectively safeguarding approximately 75% of the planet's coral reefs. During the 38th General Assembly held in September 2024, Saudi Arabia's leadership for this three-year term was formally recognized, succeeding the United States.

Dr. Khaled Asfahani, the CEO of the General Organization for the Conservation of Coral Reefs and Turtles in the Red Sea (SHAMS), and Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Suwailem, the Chief Conservation Strategy Officer, participated in a virtual handover ceremony that included distinguished guests like Peter Thomson, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Oceans, and various representatives from UN Environment Programme, NOAA, and other prominent organizations.

The newly assumed leadership signifies a robust commitment to enhancing global coral reef protection efforts. It is estimated that coral reefs contribute about $9,900 billion annually in goods and services, underscoring their immense ecological and economic significance. As part of its new responsibilities, Saudi Arabia will lead the development of the 2025-2027 Action Plan, aiming to increase commitment levels amongst member states and integrate resilient fisheries management into global policies.

Key priorities under this strategy include:
  • - Expanding the ICRI’s reach to cover 90% of the world's coral reefs.
  • - Integrating resilient reef management into global policies,
  • - Amplifying blue economy initiatives.
  • - Advancing reef monitoring through innovative technologies, leveraging insights from the 2025 Status of Coral Reefs of the World report.

Further demonstrating Saudi Arabia's ecological commitment, the country intends to roll out a youth strategy aimed at fostering awareness and engagement in coral reef protection initiatives. Collaborations are also slated with regions adjacent to the Red Sea, South Asia, and East Africa, harnessing major events, such as the upcoming United Nations Ocean Conference, to promote global awareness.

This leadership role solidifies Saudi Arabia's ambition to enhance environmental management, resonating with its Vision 2030 sustainability objectives. This strategy aligns with the recently launched Red Sea Sustainability Strategy, announced by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, to preserve the unique marine ecosystems of the Red Sea while laying the groundwork for a sustainable blue economy.

Dr. Asfahani highlighted the significance of this new role: "Saudi Arabia’s leadership in the ICRI serves as a testament to our unwavering commitment toward crafting a sustainable future for coral reefs across the globe. Our appreciation extends to the ICRI members for their trust and recognition in selecting Saudi Arabia to spearhead this vital initiative. Through this leadership, we aspire to set new benchmarks in coral reef conservation, leveraging science, innovation, and collaboration in both national and international initiatives. Our goal remains clear: to protect these vital ecosystems, ensuring their resilience for future generations while maintaining their priceless contribution to the global economy.”
