RunVermont Enthusiastically Announces the 36th Vermont City Marathon & Relay

RunVermont is excited to announce the upcoming 36th Vermont City Marathon & Relay, set to take place on Sunday, May 25, during the Memorial Day weekend. This significant event marks Vermont's largest single-day sporting affair, drawing an impressive turnout of nearly 5,000 runners, 20,000 spectators, and around 800 dedicated volunteers. This year, participants can look forward to an extraordinary atmosphere as they navigate through the scenic and vibrant streets of Burlington, Vermont.

Anthea Dexter-Cooper, the Executive Director of RunVermont, expressed gratitude towards the participants, volunteers, sponsors, and local community members for their unwavering support. In her statement, she highlighted the event's significance as a cherished tradition that unites the community and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

The marathon features a unique two-loop course, covering a total distance of 26.2 miles. This route highlights some of Burlington's most beautiful landmarks, including the iconic Church Street Marketplace and the picturesque Burlington Bike Path. Runners will also experience Vermont's distinct charm with amenities like UnTapped All Natural Athletic Fuel served as energy gels, showcasing the region's famous maple syrup. Additionally, the infectious energy of local Taiko Drummers will accompany participants throughout the race, adding to the memorable experience.

Both the starting and finishing lines are located at Waterfront Park on Lake Street. Known for its flat and fast terrain, this course is not only marveled by participants but is also recognized as a Boston Marathon qualifying race and certified by the USATF. Cash prizes are on offer across various divisions, with $2,400 awaiting the top finishers in the Open category, split between female, male, and non-binary participants. The Masters division winners and top entries in Handcycle, Pushrim Wheelchair, and Top Vermonter categories will each receive $700, with additional bonuses available for those who set new race records.

Notable returning competitors this year include Eliza Kerschner in the Women’s Open division and Kiplangat (Philemon) Terer, last year’s male champion, along with 2023 winner Lou Serafini in the Men's Open category.

The race weekend will kick off with a series of exciting events, including the Sports & Fitness Expo held at the DoubleTree by Hilton on May 23-24 and the RunVermont Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on May 23. On May 24, attendees can participate in the Vermont City Two Mile Mini Marathon, leading to race day on May 25. The wheelchair race will commence at 7:15 a.m., followed closely by the main race starting shortly thereafter.

Since its inception in 1989, with only 414 marathoners and 125 relay teams, the Vermont City Marathon has witnessed remarkable growth and demand. It has even garnered high praise from Runner’s World magazine, which has ranked it among the top 20 marathons in the United States and recognized it as one of the top 10 best marathons for beginners.
