PetSmart Charities Unveils an Innovative Veterinary Fellowship Program

In a significant move to tackle barriers faced by pet owners in accessing veterinary care, PetSmart Charities®, known for its leading role in animal welfare across North America, has officially rolled out its Veterinary Fellowship Program. The program aims to cultivate future leaders in community medicine through a combination of education, mentorship, and a commitment to fostering long-lasting professional connections.

Many families across the nation encounter tough choices when obstacles hinder their access to crucial veterinary services. Insights drawn from a recent report by PetSmart Charities and Gallup highlight that a staggering 94% of veterinarians observe that financial limitations often restrict their ability to offer recommended care. Furthermore, when pet owners opt against treatment, cost emerges as the primary reason, cited over twice as frequently as any alternative factor.

In response to these pressing challenges, PetSmart Charities has committed to investing $100 million in grant support within a multi-faceted strategy aimed at enhancing accessible veterinary care. Among various initiatives in education and training, the Veterinary Fellowship Program stands out as a vital component, launched in collaboration with five renowned universities known for their exceptional veterinary programs: Colorado State University, Cornell University, The University of Arizona, The University of California, Davis, and The University of Minnesota. This collaboration has resulted in the selection of fifteen exemplary fellows for the inaugural class.

Amy Salim, a fellowship student from Cornell University, shared her enthusiasm for the program, stating, "Over the past four years, I have focused on contributing to the communities that have nurtured me by working in clinics that assist local, underserved populations. This fellowship allows me to further my passion for community veterinary medicine while learning practical ways to enhance access to compassionate, equitable care."

The fellowship provides a unique opportunity for veterinary students who are driven to serve both pets and people who face barriers to accessing veterinary care. Selected fellows will not only benefit from financial support but will also participate in a structured professional experience. This program connects them with mentors, peers, clinical partners, and established leaders in community medicine, promoting their growth from veterinary school through the early stages of their careers.

Dr. Robyn Jaynes, director of veterinary affairs at PetSmart Charities, expressed her excitement regarding the program: "We are thrilled to launch the Veterinary Fellowship Program, which is set to equip fellows with the essential skills and confidence to practice community medicine and respond to the needs of pet families who might otherwise go without necessary care. Our vision is to establish a sustainable network of community medicine veterinarians that share knowledge, mentor future fellows, and ultimately strengthen access to care across the veterinary profession."

The fellows’ journey kicks off in the Fall of 2026, aligning with a goal to graduate around 115 veterinarians focused on community medicine by the spring of 2032. This strategic investment is anticipated to lead to over 550,000 additional veterinary visits centered on community medicine each year.

Emily McCobb, DVM, the PetSmart Charities Endowed Chair at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, emphasized the collaborative spirit of the initiative: "This Fellowship reflects what can be achieved when academic institutions partner with mission-driven organizations towards shared objectives. We take pride in contributing to the development of a generation of veterinarians who excel clinically while also being equipped to address the growing demand for accessible, affordable veterinary care."

As the program unfolds, the inaugural cohort of fellows will begin their training in Fall 2026, with expected graduation dates in the spring and summer of 2028. To ensure the longevity and success of this initiative, new cohorts will be accepted annually, thereby establishing a consistent inlet of passionate participants.
