Kohler Introduces Pearlized Finish Artist Editions Sink at Design Miami
Kohler's Revolutionary Pearlized Finish Unveiled
Kohler, a leader in kitchen and bath design, has made waves at Design Miami with the introduction of its latest innovation, the Pearlized finish. This iridescent coating transforms standard ceramic surfaces into stunning works of functional art. Developed in collaboration with the talented artist David Franklin, who also holds the title of inaugural resident of Kohler MakerSpace, this finish redefines the possibilities of ceramic design.
The debut comes with the Kohler Derring Carillon Artist Editions sink, crafted meticulously by skilled artisans right in Kohler, Wisconsin. The synergy of advanced surface technology and traditional craftsmanship is evident in the design, embodying Kohler's commitment to innovation and artistry. Laura Kohler, Chief Sustainable Living Officer, emphasized how giving artists freedom within their factories inspires true design breakthroughs. This collaborative project not only delivers a beautiful product but also tells a compelling story of experimentation and artistic evolution.
The Artistic Journey Behind Pearlized
While working in Kohler MakerSpace, Franklin created the mesmerizing sculpture "Once and Forever Lake Michigan," showcasing 1,600 intricately detailed ceramic fish, which are now featured at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. During this process, he and Kohler's engineering team were able to pioneer the application of PVD technology—typically relegated to metal items—on ceramics, resulting in the captivating pearly finish that now graces the new sink. "My creative process has always been about discovery and pushing the boundaries of light, texture, and form through material," Franklin stated. "I am thrilled to see our shared experiment morph into a design innovation."
A Unique Installation Experience
To celebrate the official reveal of the Pearlized finish, Kohler collaborated with Harry Nuriev, an artist and the creative force behind Crosby Studios. Nuriev designed an immersive installation that aligns with the 2025 Design Miami theme, "Make.Believe." This unique installation offers visitors a dreamlike landscape that captures the essence of the Pearlized finish while illuminating Franklin's journey of experimental art.
Nuriev notes, "The Pearlized finish transcends being just a surface; it becomes a dynamic canvas that changes through interaction. Our aim was to cultivate an environment that embodies the evolving beauty of this finish, inviting visitors to engage with design as a living entity."
The immersive exhibition will be accessible from December 3-7 at booth X-08, where Kohler will also host a Design Talk on December 2. The discussion, titled "The Alchemy of Making From Imagination to Innovation," will feature a panel including Nuriev, Franklin, and Michael Seum, VP of Industrial Design at Kohler. Collectively, they will unpack the collaborative journey of bringing creative visions to life through industrial design processes, highlighting how Kohler's Pearlized sink exemplifies new artistic mediums.
