'THE TOKYO TOILET / SHIBUYA': An Innovative Art Experience

In a remarkable fusion of art and public utility, Shibuya Ward has announced the launch of an art project entitled 'THE TOKYO TOILET / SHIBUYA', scheduled from July 19 to September 23, 2023. This venture is set to showcase the creative genius of renowned photographer Daido Moriyama, who has captured the essence of the Tokyo Toilet initiative through his lens.

The project will be staged across 11 specially curated public toilets, designed as part of the broader initiative with 17 toilets revitalized throughout the area. Each toilet is not merely a restroom but a canvas exhibiting Moriyama's distinctive photography, all under the aesthetic framework of 'THE TOKYO TOILET', which aims to redefine societal norms surrounding public conveniences.

About the Project

This innovative project represents a collaboration between Shibuya Ward, led by Mayor Ken Hasebe, and various creative entities, including MASTER MIND LTD, MATCH&CO, TANK, SKWAT, and SWITCH. The unique nature of this project lies in its effort to combine functionality with artistic expression, turning utilitarian spaces into engaging art installations.

Moriyama's photographs, which have garnered international acclaim at art fairs in Milan and Paris, will take on new significance as they adorn the walls of these public facilities. A standout feature of this exhibition will be specialized toilet paper printed with Moriyama's images, further enhancing the public's experience and interaction with art.

Mayor Hasebe expressed deep gratitude to the numerous architects and creators who have supported the renovation and maintenance of public toilets in Shibuya.
