Thanksgiving Road Safety: Ensuring Safe Travels for All
As families across the nation gather to give thanks this Thanksgiving, the National Safety Council (NSC) is emphasizing the importance of roadway safety. This year has seen a promising decline in tragic traffic accidents during the holiday season, as NSC projects about 439 fatalities in traffic incidents—a notable decrease from 502 last year. However, the Council reminds us that every life lost on the road is preventable, and drunk driving remains a critical issue.
The Thanksgiving holiday period this year extends from 6:00 PM on Wednesday, November 26, through 11:59 PM on Sunday, November 30. Although the NSC's findings showcase progress in reducing roadway fatalities, it is alarming that alcohol-impaired drivers are involved in a staggering 35% of these fatalities, which is considerably higher than the annual average.
Lorraine Martin, the CEO of the NSC, stated, "Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, family, and being together with the loved ones we cherish. We aspire for every traveler to reach their destination safely. While we are heartened by this decline, it is essential to acknowledge that 439 lives lost mean 439 families facing an empty chair at their dinner table. Each one of us has the influence to ensure these tragedies do not happen by making informed decisions. This Thanksgiving, prioritize safety and make choices that protect yourself and others on the road, enabling everyone to commemorate the holiday with family and friends."
In light of the holiday travel surge, the NSC encourages drivers to prepare their vehicles in advance, plan for a designated sober driver, and minimize distractions while driving. Key safety reminders include buckling up, adhering to speed limits, and being vigilant for pedestrians and cyclists.
In addition, the NSC is collaborating with communities nationwide through the Safe System Approach, an initiative aimed at advancing comprehensive roadway safety solutions. For those interested in learning about efforts to achieve zero traffic fatalities, further details can be found at
