Saudi Arabia Takes Charge of International Coral Reef Conservation Efforts in Historic Step Forward
Saudi Arabia's Leadership in Coral Conservation
Saudi Arabia has officially launched its leadership as the Secretariat for the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) during its 14th term, an important development that promises to enhance global efforts for reef conservation. This initiative, which represents 102 members including 45 nations that together safeguard 75% of the planet's coral ecosystems, underscores the nation's growing influence and commitment to preserving marine biodiversity.
During the recent virtual handover ceremony, notable figures such as Dr. Khaled Asfahani, CEO of the General Organization for the Conservation of Coral Reefs and Turtles in the Red Sea (SHAMS), and Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Suwailem, Chief Conservation Strategy Officer, celebrated this pivotal moment in conservation history. This move was confirmed during the 38th General Meeting held in September 2024, where Saudi Arabia succeeded the United States in this crucial role. The ceremony saw participation from global organizations, including the UN Environment Program and NOAA, marking a significant global alignment toward coral reef protection.
The value of coral reefs extends far beyond their striking beauty. They are home to about 25% of the world's marine species and contribute an astounding estimated $9.9 trillion annually in goods and services. This economic reality emphasizes the necessity of robust conservation strategies aligned with sustainable development goals.
As part of its new leadership, Saudi Arabia is tasked with driving the 2025-2027 Action Plan aimed at extending ICRI's membership to cover 90% of the world's coral reefs. This plan emphasizes the integration of resilient reef management into global policies and the enhancement of national biodiversity strategies. The approach combines innovative technologies, improved reef monitoring systems, and the insights gleaned from the upcoming 'Status of Coral Reefs of the World 2025' report.
Among the initiatives under this new strategy is the introduction of ICRI's Youth Strategy aimed at galvanizing younger generations in reef conservation efforts. Enhanced collaborative efforts across the Red Sea, South Asia, and East Africa will play a significant role in raising awareness during major events like the upcoming UN Ocean Conference.
This leadership role reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to environmental stewardship, in line with its Vision 2030 goals which focus on sustainability and economic diversification. The recently introduced National Strategy for Red Sea Sustainability further highlights the Kingdom's commitment to conserving unique marine ecosystems while fostering a sustainable blue economy.
Dr. Khaled Asfahani expressed the importance of this leadership position: "Saudi Arabia's role as ICRI Secretariat underscores our unwavering commitment to a sustainable future for coral reefs worldwide. We are deeply grateful to ICRI members for their trust and recognition of Saudi Arabia in leading this critical global initiative. Through this leadership, we aim to set new benchmarks in coral reef conservation, leveraging science, innovation, and collaboration to drive national and international initiatives."
