Superior HealthPlan's Investment of $18 Million to Support Texas Families' Health Needs

Superior HealthPlan's Investment of $18 Million in Texas Health Needs

In a significant move to bolster healthcare access for low-income families in Texas, Superior HealthPlan has dedicated $18 million to provide access to over-the-counter (OTC) items for members enrolled in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This investment, covering the period from 2020 to 2024, underscores the organization's commitment to enhancing the lives of its members across all 254 counties in Texas.

According to Mitch Wasden, CEO of Superior HealthPlan, "The extra benefits we provide our members are critical in supporting their overall health and well-being." He noted that there has been a marked demand for these OTC items, which can significantly impact families in need. The funds are allocated as part of the Value-added Services (VAS), which are designed to supplement standard Medicaid and CHIP benefits.

Details of the Program

Eligible members can receive a quarterly allowance of either $25 or $30 to spend on a variety of essential OTC products, which cover an extensive range of categories:
  • - Digestive health products
  • - Eye, ear, and oral care items
  • - Household cleaning supplies
  • - Personal hygiene products
  • - Sun care products

This initiative is part of a broader range of Value-added Services that aim to support not only individual health but also family well-being. Selected members from various programs, including STAR, CHIP, STAR Kids, and STAR Health, can benefit from this allowance, ensuring they have access to necessary health and hygiene products.

In addition to the OTC allowances, Superior HealthPlan offers other valuable benefits, including:
  • - Enhanced vision benefits: Medicaid and CHIP members can access a $150 retail allowance for prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses, available every year or every two years, depending on their specific plan.
  • - Annual physicals: Members aged 4 to 18 years can receive reimbursement up to $35 for school or sports physicals, ensuring they remain active and healthy.
  • - Start Smart for Your Baby® program: This educational initiative provides expectant mothers enrolled in STAR, CHIP, STAR+PLUS, and STAR Kids with important resources and supplies.

Upcoming Updates

Value-added Services are subject to annual reviews and updates, with new offerings expected to be introduced by September 1, 2025. Members can visit SuperiorHealthPlan.com/OTC to keep track of the latest available OTC items and ensure they are making the most out of their benefits.
