Reju Secures Significant Funding for Circular Economy in Textiles
Reju™, the innovative company committed to transforming textile waste into new materials, has marked a significant milestone by securing €135 million in funding. This investment is provided under the Dutch government's Nationale Investeringsregeling Klimaatprojecten Industrie (NIKI), aimed at accelerating industrial decarbonization and advancing circularity in the textile sector.
The funding will facilitate the establishment of a state-of-the-art recycling center at the Chemelot industrial park located in Sittard-Geleen, Netherlands. This facility is designed not only to enhance Reju's operational capabilities but also to streamline the investment phase necessary for achieving effective and sustainable textile recycling. According to Patrik Frisk, CEO of Reju, "We are grateful for the Dutch government and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy for their support in expanding commercial technologies that can deliver measurable emission reductions and speed up the transition to a truly circular textile industry."
With this funding, Reju plans to scale its operations to produce high-quality circular intermediate products from otherwise hard-to-recycle polyester-containing textiles. The process involves transforming discarded textiles from landfills and incinerators into regenerated polyester material, which can be reused within textile supply chains. This innovative approach is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 50% compared to virgin polyester production.
The Chemelot industrial park is strategically selected for its established industrial ecosystem, communal infrastructure, and proximity to innovation and research facilities, all of which are crucial for efficient scaling and reliability of operations. This new recycling hub will specifically focus on processing consumer textile waste that would otherwise end up in landfills, effectively closing the loop in textile production cycles.
Reju aims to lead the way in sustainable textile practices by not only minimizing waste but also providing a replicable model for other regions. By prioritizing industrial integration, energy efficiency, and resource optimization, the company seeks to maximize the displacement of primary fossil fuel-based resources with circular supply chains that are fully traceable.
