LuckyFM's Major Transition from AM to FM Radio
LuckyFM Ibaraki Broadcasting, based in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, has announced a significant transition in its broadcasting strategy, leading to the cessation of its AM radio operations. Beginning February 1, 2026, the station will officially halt its AM service from the Shimokuni transmission site, marking a shift towards a fully FM-based broadcasting approach. This decision is part of a broader strategy initiated by the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, aimed at evaluating the impacts of moving exclusively to FM radio broadcasting.
Since its inception on April 1, 1963, as an AM radio broadcaster, LuckyFM has remained a key player in delivering content to its listeners across Ibaraki. Following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the company embraced the need for robust broadcasting solutions and launched its FM services in August 2015, continuing to provide the same programming via both AM and FM.
However, changes initiated by the ministry have prompted LuckyFM to move forward with the cessation of all AM services. The first stage saw the shutdown of the Tsuchiura and Ken-nishi relay stations on February 1, 2024, and now with the upcoming suspension of the Shimokuni site, all three AM stations will cease operations.
The shift to FM broadcasting is timely, as FM radio signals are generally more resilient during disasters and have a significantly shorter wavelength, allowing for better indoor reception. Furthermore, the AM equipment is reaching the end of its operational lifespan, leading to the decision for consolidation into a single FM service. This transition aims to strengthen the company's foundational business operations while fulfilling its role as the sole private regional broadcaster in Ibaraki Prefecture.
As it stands, FM broadcasting now successfully covers 100% of the households served by the previous three AM stations. In consideration of the potential impacts on listeners, local governments, and other stakeholders, LuckyFM will announce the cessation of its AM broadcasting six months in advance, extending the usual notification period from three months to five months. The operational pause will run from February 1 to September 30, 2026, with a possibility for extension.
To ensure a smooth transition, LuckyFM plans a comprehensive communication strategy. This will include notifications via its website and programs, as well as briefings for relevant local authorities. The station will also promote the use of its internet radio service,
