JCP&L Assists Customers with Energy Bill Support Initiatives
As seasonal temperature changes affect energy consumption levels significantly, Jersey Central Power & Light (JCPL) has made it a priority to support their customers during these challenging economic times. With the recent conclusion of the New Jersey Winter Termination Program, which was designed to prevent utility shutoffs during the cold months, JCPL is urging residents to take advantage of various assistance options available to them.
Doug Mokoid, President of FirstEnergy New Jersey, stated that as temperatures fluctuate dramatically, energy usage tends to soar. This often leads to a spike in monthly electric bills, potentially causing financial distress for many households. He emphasizes the company's commitment to helping customers navigate these concerns and find suitable solutions to make energy costs more manageable.
One of the key programs available is the Universal Service Fund (USF), which operates year-round to assist eligible households in managing their electricity costs. This initiative also offers the Fresh Start Program, which can help eliminate any past-due balances for qualifying customers. To qualify for the USF, households must meet certain criteria, including a gross income below 60% of the state median and face high energy costs relative to their income, depending on whether they use electric heat or not.
JBCL has made it easy for customers to learn more about these offerings and to sign up for assistance by visiting their website, where they can schedule appointments for personalized support.
In addition to the USF, JCPL will be hosting a free energy assistance event on April 22 at the Charles A. Smith Community Center located in Forked River, New Jersey. This event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and attendees can receive in-person help with applying for the USF and other assistance programs. Community partners will also be present to answer any questions that may arise.
Several other payment assistance programs are available to eligible JCPL customers, including the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which provides direct payments to help with winter heating costs, as well as emergency aid to maintain or restore electrical services. Additionally, New Jersey's SHARES program aims to support low-to-moderate-income households needing energy assistance, while the PAGE initiative helps customers facing past-due bills.
For those seeking more information, the 2-1-1 Helpline is available 24/7, offering guidance on locating local programs that can assist with utility bills and more. Other resources include the Lifeline benefit for eligible seniors or disabled individuals, as well as Comfort Partners Programs that offer free energy evaluations and upgrades to help reduce future usage.
These initiatives highlight JCPL’s dedication to maintaining their customers' comfort and safety during tough seasons. They encourage anyone needing assistance to reach out to their support team via their dedicated webpage for valuable resources. JCPL serves about 1.2 million customers throughout New Jersey in various counties, ensuring that assistance is widely accessible.
Overall, through various programs and events, JCPL is actively working to alleviate the financial burden of energy costs on their customers, assisting them to remain comfortable and safe in their homes, regardless of external weather conditions.
