Ballard Power Systems and Siemens Mobility Join Forces for Hydrogen Trains in Romania
Ballard Power Systems Supplies Siemens with Hydrogen Technology
In a remarkable step towards sustainable rail transport, Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP; TSX: BLDP) announced a significant order from Siemens Mobility GmbH. This partnership aims to introduce a fleet of hydrogen-powered trains in Romania, marking a pioneering moment for the region. The order includes 24 units of the FCrail™ 200 kW fuel cell modules, contributing to a total power output of 4.8 MW, which will operate 12 Mireo Plus H trains for the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF).
A Historic Deployment
The deployment signifies Romania's first hydrogen-powered train fleet, which is also distinguished as the largest commercial rollout of the Mireo Plus H model to date. This order is historic not only for being the first of its kind outside Germany but also as the inaugural fleet of Mireo trains in Eastern Europe. Deliveries of the fuel cell systems are scheduled to occur in 2027 and 2028, with the introduction of the trains into passenger service expected in 2029.
Strengthening Collaborations
This venture represents the deepening of the long-standing collaboration between Ballard and Siemens Mobility, building upon a multi-year supply agreement that began in 2022. The Mireo Plus H train has already been tested successfully in Germany, demonstrating the reliability and performance of Ballard's cutting-edge fuel cell technology in the demanding rail environment.
Marty Neese, CEO of Ballard Power Systems, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the partnership, highlighting how Siemens Mobility's commitment to zero-emission rail technology aligns with Ballard’s mission to deliver innovative clean transport solutions. In his words, “Together, we are innovating and delivering clean transport solutions that are leading the industry.”
Transitioning to Hydrogen
The introduction of hydrogen trains is a transformative approach to replacing traditional diesel engines on non-electrified lines. Trains powered by Ballard’s fuel cells will excel in providing safe, reliable, and zero-emission operations. They are designed for long-range services and can be rapidly refueled, facilitating flexible operations across a variety of challenging routes and environment conditions.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, this deployment not only signals a turning point for Romanian rail transport but also underscores the growing importance of hydrogen in the larger conversation about environmental sustainability. As industries worldwide grapple with the transition to cleaner energy sources, Ballard Power Systems stands at the forefront, delivering comprehensive hydrogen solutions ranging from production to logistics and application in mobility technologies.
Moreover, Ballard Power is focused on enhancing its Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) model, aiming to provide an integrated hydrogen ecosystem that addresses a wide array of applications, including stationary power solutions for critical off-grid operations.
In conclusion, the collaboration between Ballard and Siemens Mobility in Romania exemplifies a significant stride toward the future of rail transport, showcasing the potential of hydrogen technology to revolutionize the industry while meeting the pressing demands for sustainability and reduced emissions.
