NMGE Gagaku Concert: Tradition Meets Innovation
The Naoyuki MANABE GAGAKU Ensemble (NMGE), known for its grand performances, is set to present an exciting program that highlights both modern compositions and traditional Gagaku pieces. Scheduled for August 31, 2026, at the Shibuya Cultural Center in Tokyo, this concert promises a unique blend of artistry and innovation.
For the first time, NMGE will perform contemporary solo and duo works, featuring renowned composer Atsuhiko Gondo. The ensemble's repertoire will include Gondo's piece
'Higan/Sohgan' (2025), performed as a Shō duo, alongside a commissioned work by rising composer Kōta Fukumoto for Hichiriki duo. Additionally, NMGE's leader, Naoyuki Manabe, will present
'Invention VII', a solo flute piece that showcases the instrument's versatility.
One of the highlights of the evening is expected to be the traditional Gagaku performance of
'Kishunraku', which has been meticulously revised and reinterpreted by the ensemble. The iconic dance
'Omerimai' will be reintroduced with enhanced precision and artistry, offering a fresh take on this timeless piece. NMGE's commitment to blending tradition with innovation is evident, as they strive to present performances that resonate with both historical significance and contemporary perspectives.
A New Approach
This year marks a significant change for NMGE, as they transition from their previously established annual concert to biannual performances due to increased demand. This shift allows them to delve deeper into their artistic explorations and cater to their expanding audience. While the ensemble has historically focused on contemporary group performances, they are now committed to dedicating time and resources to new works that emphasize individual instruments.
Manabe expressed his excitement for the concert, stating, "After six years since NMGE's formation, we have steadily developed techniques like 'Kodama-buki'—playing within garden settings to create resonances—and 'Omerimai'. This concert is set to mark a significant milestone in these explorations. The research into 'Tai-buki' (playing variations of melodies) has evolved significantly; it can often create a chaotic sound landscape when performed by more than three musicians. The challenge is to control these seemingly random elements into a cohesive musical experience."
The ensemble is set to showcase its groundbreaking work on multi-group arrangements, having achieved great success in previous performances incorporating various methods. These include the combined
'Tai-buki' in pieces such as
'Kushinji' and
'Gojōgaku'. Their experimental approach aims to push the boundaries of Gagaku further, making the audience’s experience truly immersive.
