The Asian American Foundation Launches Board Accelerator to Cultivate Future AAPI Corporate Leaders
The Asian American Foundation Launches Board Accelerator
In a significant move to address the underrepresentation of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in corporate leadership, the Asian American Foundation (TAAF) has announced the launch of the TAAF Board Accelerator (TBA). This innovative $1.5 million initiative aims to connect exceptional AAPI executive talent with opportunities in corporate boardrooms, where their presence has been historically limited.
Addressing the Leadership Gap
Despite constituting 13% of the American workforce, AAPIs held merely 5.4% of the Fortune 500 board seats in 2022. This stark disparity highlights a critical disconnect between the demographic's workforce participation and their representation in leadership roles. The TBA is designed to mitigate this gap by enhancing the visibility of board-ready AAPI executives, thereby facilitating stronger governance and collaboration.
Norman Chen, CEO of TAAF, emphasized the importance of tapping into the AAPI leadership talent pool. He stated, “Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are a vital and growing part of our nation's workforce, yet too many companies are not fully utilizing this exceptional talent.” The initiative, backed by a generous start from the Walter and Shirley Wang Foundation, also aims to reshape perceptions surrounding AAPIs’ leadership potential within corporate structures.
