Tokyo Yamathon: A Unique Charity Walk Event in Tokyo

Tokyo Yamathon is set to take place on October 17, 2026, offering participants an exciting opportunity to rediscover Tokyo while contributing to charitable causes. This charity walk will cover approximately 42 kilometers along the JR Yamanote Line, passing through all 30 stations within a 12-hour time limit. Participants will work together in teams to enjoy the scenic views of the city and capture memorable moments through active photography.

Organized by the International Volunteer Group, the event is now open for entry. The term 'Yamathon' is a blend of the Yamanote Line and marathon, emphasizing a walking challenge rather than running. While completing the full route is encouraged, the event also offers scaled-down options such as the Half Yamathon (approximately 21 km, finishing at Mejiro Station) and the Half-a-Half (approximately 10 km, finishing at Osaki Station).

Many people are familiar with the Yamanote Line, yet few have taken the opportunity to visit every station. This makes the Tokyo Yamathon a unique event where participants can gain a fresh perspective of Tokyo while giving back to the community.


Participation Details

Each team of 2-4 members is required to pay a participation fee of 16,000 yen, which is fully donated to partnering NPO organizations. This approach aims to popularize fundraising activities commonplace in other parts of the world, merging enjoyment with a commitment to social good.

The Tokyo Yamathon event showcases diversity, with nearly half of the participants being foreign residents or visitors from abroad. This international flavor adds to the overall enjoyment of the event, making it a vibrant and fun experience.

• - Start Times: 8:00 AM - 9:45 AM (staggered starting blocks to prevent crowding)
• - Final Limit: 9:30 PM for the full Yamathon; 4:30 PM for the Half Yamathon; 2:00 PM for the Half-a-Half.
• - Starting Point/Finish: Tokyo Building TOKIA, Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo

Event Categories

1. Full Yamathon (Approx. 42 km): Complete the full circuit while photographing at each station.
2. Half Yamathon (Approx. 21 km): Finish at Mejiro Station after visiting 15 stations.
3. Half-a-Half (Approx. 10 km): End at Osaki Station after visiting 7 stations.

Timing and Tracking

The Tokyo Yamathon will feature a dedicated app to track completion times and announce rankings after the event. Note that this is not a competitive race; the focus is on personal achievements and community engagement.

Course Navigation

Participants can choose their own route focusing on 30 stations for the full Yamathon, while the Half Yamathon will emphasize 15 stations, maintaining flexibility in travel direction and pathways.
