MAHLE Enters Energy Storage Market with Cooling Modules for Power Systems

MAHLE's Entry into Energy Storage Market

MAHLE, a reputable automotive parts supplier, is making a significant leap into the energy sector with its newly secured project focused on the production of cooling modules specifically designed for stationary energy storage systems. Expected to commence mass production in 2026, these cooling solutions will play an essential role in stabilizing power grids and temporarily storing renewable energy from sources like wind and solar.

The growing demand for energy, particularly in data centers, highlights the increasing importance of stationary storage systems. MAHLE has gained the confidence of its first client, an international manufacturer of commercial vehicles and drivetrains, as the new cooling modules are tailored for their manufacturing needs.

Christian Kuechlin, Vice President of MAHLE Industrial Thermal Systems, emphasized the company’s expertise in transporting cooling modules into this new application. He shared, "Our knowledge of cooling module design from the transportation sector can be aptly applied to container-type stationary storage systems. Since battery stacks occupy most of the interior space within containers, our cooling solutions are developed to be compact and efficient to meet the client's specific requirements."

Historically, cooling in stationary storage systems has relied on basic air conditioning systems. However, with the advent of high-performance lithium-ion batteries, the energy density has increased, which in turn has raised the demands for enhanced cooling capabilities due to the accompanying heat generation. MAHLE’s cooling modules utilize a liquid cooling method, offering a maximum cooling capacity of 42 kilowatts (kW).

Kuechlin further elaborated, "Our cooling modules allow energy storage systems to operate within the optimal temperature range of 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, ensuring longevity, high durability, and stable load management. Furthermore, with MAHLE's extensive component and system technology, we are potentially leading the market with our compact and scalable solutions."

In pursuit of establishing a stronghold in various markets, MAHLE is expanding its ventures beyond the automotive realm. The company is also developing liquid cooling module solutions for fast-charging stations designed for electric vehicles. This technology can benefit numerous sectors, including high-performance computing, data centers, heat pump systems, and solar power manufacturers looking to leverage MAHLE's expertise in thermal management.
